Because People in power are Stupid: I think he swung at it.

Maybe, but the ump counted it as two balls

I seem to remember probably about 10 years ago a certain player getting hit in the groin, but he made a sort of Wayne's World "Schwing" motion into the pitch, and it ricocheted really far into the crowd.

Can't say I remember what team he played for, or if this actually happened, but for some reason I think it did.

Two balls with one pitch.

When such an unfortunate physics experiment happens with the teams I coach, i tell the victim to jump up and land on their heels. They look at me like I'm crazy but it farking works. Trust me.

VvonderJesus: There is no cup on this planet that would save you from that

Read the part of Johnny Bench's autobiography where he talks about the time he wasn't paying attention and missed the pitchers sign that he was going to throw a "spitball".  If I remember correctly, his cup ended up in 6 or 7 pieces.  It hurt me just to read about it.

The explanation I've heard for the "land on the heels" is just in case you're balls have been shoved up into you.

Then I propose:

"How to get one strike and two balls on a single pitch"

Two balls, one pitch.

I haven't played baseball since Little League, but can you actually get a HBP and a K simultaneously? The batter's out, but he still gets to take first? Or are the announcers just idiots?

If it's recorded as a strike it's a K and not recorded as an HBP, and he'll be forced out by touching a live ball on the dropped third strike.  Basically, the book won't say both, but the umpire has discretion to determine if the batter was trying to get out of the way, was swinging the bat, etc.

Not a baseball expert, but I thought a screwball breaks the other way from a right handed pitcher (as in, left to right).

Tryfan: Not a baseball expert, but I thought a screwball breaks the other way from a right handed pitcher (as in, left to right).

It does. This was a fastball the writer was trying to be punny and failed misearbly.

This happens more than you think and typically it happens when the batter is fooled and swings at the pitch, and most of the time it is by a side armer who has extreme horizontal movement on their fastballs

An Example:

Darin O'day vs Erik Aybar
