If it's 20 feet long it was quite a way ahead of the kayak in that shot. Cool photo, misleading story.

Seriously, though. This kind of aggressive behavior is exactly the kind of thing we'd have a better understanding of if Western nations didn't have their panties in a bunch over Japanese whaling research.

One of the coolest photos ever.  i4.mirror.co.uk

I'd love to be in my kayak and have that happen....except I don't put my 'yak in the water when it's below 60 degrees.  I'm scared of hypothermia if I fell off the kayak.

I saw a youtube video of a penguin stuck on an ice flow, and a bunch of Orcas were rocking it back and forth like a pickup truck, until the penguin fell off. Then the orcas grabbed it, threw it back on, and rocked it back and forth again.

And the moral of the story is: Orcas are dicks.

They weren't talking about the YELLOW kayak.

The article was about the whale going under the RED kayak that the photographer was in.

Orcas are like the honey badgers of the seas.  They are so on top of the food chain that they scare the hell out of great whites and humpback whales.

Heh, I remember a few years back here when I was on a paddling team, we're out doing a run, 6 man canoe.  Fully rigged I think the one we were in is around 300-400 lbs.  Plus 6 dudes, lets say another 1000? So its a fairly decently solid boat.  Until a humpback whale surfaces about 20 feet away.  First you go, "WOOOOOHOOOO AWESOME!" then you go "Holy crap if we piss that off it could flick us with its tail and send 1000+ lbs flying through the air."

Orcas like to fight great whites but not for food (although they will eat them too), but just for fun. Sharks can not swim upside down (it makes them comatose and they'll eventually die if kept in this state) and orcas think this is absolutely hilarious, so when they fight, the orca will just flip the shark upside down then swim away.

Once again: Orcas are dicks.

It takes a couple seconds to realize "oh wait someone must have taken that picture" then click on the other pictures and realize it went under the photographer's kayak.

Yeah, see, if the orcas in that video really wanted to eat the penguin, they would have done so already. Seems more like they were just chasing it around for fun.

Because, as we all know, orcas are dicks.
