Maybe next time they should do a little research on a country before they hold the pageant there.

2013-06-06 07:52:09 PM
Does that mean the swimsuit competition will be in their birthday suits?

It'd be better if they just canceled the whole thing. Not because I don't think that the contest would be valid without such attire, but because as a world (which this contest, in admittedly limited ways, purports to represent in some manner) of all examples to follow, I'd think taking the lead from the most barbaric of peoples (and their capitulation indicates they do indeed fear a barbaric response) is about the worst thing we can do for progress. If you cancel it you've lost the battle, but if you let them alter it to their own desires, then you're taking a bite out of losing the war.

How is shameless ogling proper judging to take place if the contestants are in burqas?

They should move the whole kit and caboodle to Miami where women are free to display their buttcheeks.

In related news these "Miss X" contests still exist in 2013...

I've seen a few buttcheeks in Walmart,. So let's have it in Garland, TX.

If that is so, then why not just hold it in a different country?  The "barbaric" country would be "punished" by not being allowed to host the pageant and the pageant could be conducted normally elsewhere.  Seems like a win-win to me.

I would be perfectly fine with that if it were possible. I was making an assumption that such a large event is planned very far in advance and couldn't just be moved without more time and severe financial loss.

Without the swimsuit competition, there's no reason for anyone to watch it so it would be a lot easier to just cancel it.

The beaches in Bali are packed with tourists wearing bikinis. On some beaches, particularly Kuta (the main tourist trap), some non-Balinese Indonesians on vacation will walk around (fully clothed) and openly gawk but otherwise there are no problems.

Yes, but they've had Muslim terrorist bombings.

Guess we better ban all pageants then huh?

I say let the contestants pick what they compete in. They are beautiful women, not beautiful pieces of meat. Let them vote on the following categories, and they compete in the highest 3 vote getters:

1. Evening gowns
2. Swimsuits
3. Lingerie
4. Topless
5. Naked (except for shoes)

Fair enough, but in that case I propose that answering the question "Are fundamentalists a major problem in this country?" should be part of the vetting process in the future.

How about this, if you can't watch a lovely woman in a bikini without going full retard, DONT farkING WATCH IT. Your religious ire means nothing to me at all, please go back and live in your third century huts so you can match your outdated and draconian beliefs, and quit spewing your "anti everything but us" derp all over everyone.

Bali is an island in Indonesia. The majority of Bali's population is Hindu. They have seen plenty of women in bikinis, the majority of them fat Australians.

I always saw these things as culture bombs. Instead of invading your country and dominating you militarily, we will instead show you how free and irrepressible our women are, thereby invalidating your backwards Stone Age views of women. But no bikinis means this culture bomb won't be as effective. So bravo Bali, hope you enjoy being culturally irrelevant.

Sure, but just like SLC which has a big LDS pop relative to the US where that's a huge minority, the national majority religion is considerably more politically relevant for international relations.

CIA World Factbook.

The province of Bali has about 3.8 million people, over 90% of whom are Hindu. Indonesia as a whole has a population of 237 million, over 80% of whom are Muslim.
It really doesn't matter what the Balinese think about bikinis.

Beauty pageants are a sad reminder of an age when women were considered pretty trinkets.

I can't believe we still have them... Or at least, that we have big televised productions of Miss America, Miss [insert state here], Miss World, Miss Universe, etc. and don't do the same with pageants for men. Yes, we have a Mr. Universe "pageant", but it's a bodybuilder competition. I mean a pageant for men where they do ALL the same things as the female versions; The swimsuit competition, evening wear competition, talent competition, lame-ass Q&A session, parading around, doing the musical number at the beginning, and getting crowned by a condescending, creepy old woman who sings "Here he is, Mister America."

Women complain about the representations of women in places like Hooters, or in movies or comic books, but then give the supermodels and beauty pageant contestants a pass because they're "empowered" somehow.

I guess "empowered" is code for "getting paid well."
