It's not as black and redacted as painted in the article.

Holy shiat, DHS literally rejected reasonable suspicion searches on the grounds that "Our officers sometimes have hunches."

Probably not.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, do you want to comment on whether it violates a traveler's FOURTH Amendment rights, you morans?

And justified it by claiming that sometimes unreasonable searches turn up useful evidence.

Sometimes you can find a nickel sifting through a latrine. I'm don't think that's the kind of reasoning we want guiding our governmental policy.

If you actually can't remember, have a fun time sitting in jail because the judge likely won't buy it.

Linky?

Also:  Obama, you and your administration have been even worse on civil liberties than Bush, which I didn't think was possible (and Bush at least had 9/11 to justify it).  My vote doesn't count since I live in a BLUE part of CA, but if the Republicans can come up with someone sane who pushes that line, I'll vote for them.  I'm a moderately wealthy (in theory.  Bay Area Cost of Living sucks) white male.  All the Republican crazy social stuff is ignoring me at worst and a net benefit at best to me.

However when an actor commits a crime and one knowingly conceals it or protecting the actor is also seen as the same as the crime that was committed

Righteous Liberals lost to partisan politics. You gotta protect your President because he is your man. Liberals expect more because they tow the party line on elections. And this is how you repay them, by farking them over? These people put you in the office to stop this nonsense.

You can use TruCrypt, but all that gets you is detained, until whenever you give up all the passwords: you're still not going wherever you were planning on going, not with the laptop, anyway.

For the truly paranoid, it should be easy for an agent to plant any kind of evidence in your laptop when it's wide open for inspection, and then they have you publicly outed as a kiddy diddler or a jihadist or whatever. Your life, as you knew it, is over.  You'll spend your years and your money fighting the US gubmint and even if you win, you'll be old and bankrupt by the time you do.

I think if you travel, to be safe, you need a "disposable" laptop with nothing on it but a read-only drive, one carrying nothing much but the OS and a few light apps, some MP3's and a boring movie, maybe angry birds...  When they ask to look at it, you let them, there's nothing on it and no way to plant anything. They can image the drive all they want; it's nothing. Then you tap the Cloud at your destination for whatever work you're going to do, , bank it in the cloud, (or you or ship a drive to the hotel  and mail it home ahead of you) wipe the machine, and retrieve your shiat when you're home.

And here is a major problem: trust

The GOP has given Democrats no evidence to show that they are truly against itthisout of principles or whether its out of partisanship. The GOP has farked everyone over so many times that no member of the Democratic party could ever even send them birthday cards.

This isn't so much a border patrol thing as a TSA thing, but...

One of the big problems that the government has is that everyone needs a clearance and a clearance takes about a year to get.  So the people who work for the government are not only people who need a job, but who still need a job a full year after they apply.

It's not so much a problem for groups like the NSA (If they made an offer, I'd drop everything since they're about a decade ahead of everyone else, and working on that would be really cool), but for people who are making $20K in Northern VA, it means that you're getting the worst of the worst.  People who want the low paying government jobs (and at least in my industry, government pay is LOW), and people who are so incompetent/unlucky that they couldn't find a job a year after they started looking.

How dare you! I have it on the authority of right-wing icons such as (to name a few) Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Jonah Goldberg, Michelle Malkin, and Rush Limbaugh (many current / former GOP stalwarts such as Newt Gingrich, John McCain, John Boehner, and Sarah "Barracuda" Palin as well) that such thoughts are:

Dangerous
Akin to giving aid and comfort to the enemy
Treason
Show you are soft of terror

After all, if you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't care. Well, according to republicans prior to November 2008. Really, they only started caring in January of 2009.

I just had great fun pointing this out to a friend. He didn't recognize his cognitive dissonance until I pointed it out. Whereas I have hated this since it happened. He actually wrote a letter of chastisement to Russ Feingold (who voted against this shiat twice) at the time. He still stammered when I reminded him of the recent past.

Okay I should ignore that portion under section III A 1concerning their legal authority to conduct these searched under the fourth amendment that is redacted almost in its entirety from pages 9-15?  Because it might allow someone to dispute said searches in a court of law?

I understand it's his administration but as we're all aware of, that's not enough in todays Congress.

On Page 18 of the 52-page document under the section entitled "First Amendment," several paragraphs are completely blacked out. They simply end with the sentence: "The laptop border searches in the [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and [Customs and Border Protection] do not violate travelers' First Amendment rights as defined by the courts."

Well no schitt Sherlock.  It would violate the traveler's 4th Amendment Right.

The sheer waste of time this entails. Do you want to know how we can tell the people who decided this was a worthwhile policy know nothing about computers? Computer science students should be asked ways around this on their entrance exams.
