I was thinking that same thing.  And the sad thing is that you KNOW that a large majority of them felt proud of themselves that she quit.

Her opponent actually said this after the match:

"I've played her before [including a 6-0, 6-1 loss to her in the 2012 quarterfinals], and, not to be mean, but I know she has an attitude, and I was ready to put up with it. But this brought it to a whole new level."

Stay classy, New England.

Forget it Jake, it's New Hampshire.  They've gone a bit off the deep end over that way.  I mean I hate Massholes as much as any self respecting person but I'm not going to taunt teenage girls over it.

From what I understand, she was playing for the New Hampshire state title and the girl lives in Mass. She goes to a private school just over the border. She was apparently being heckled for not being from the state, which was important to these people for some reason.

Too bad she couldn't win, turn to the crowd and yell, "How do you like them apples?" with a full Will Hunting accent.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was mostly rowdy teenage boys who went to her opponent's school. There was a lot of that sort of thing at our high school basketball games. We'd get into it good. I never saw it at a tennis match, but every class has it's clowns.

I was astonished at the level of stupid in that article (people heckling at a girl's tennis match, people getting upset about her living in another state, and her leaving the court over some idiotic fat middle-aged people); luckily fark covered it all in 13 comments.

playing sports comes with heckling. At all levels. I played little-league baseball and pop warner football. Both had their fair share of people yelling at 10 year olds. The lesson you take away is that adversity is a part of life, not everyone will like you, and you still have to go out and perform against the toughest of circumstances. It's the stuff that builds character.

I have a feeling it has more to do with the sport that was being played and the gender involved. If this was a 16 year old boy playing in a basketball or football game, everybody would be calling him a pansy and telling him to man up. But for some reason tennis is off limits from heckling, and heckling a teenage female athlete is wrong.

I don't understand quitting because of Hecklers,  you're just giving them exactly what they want and the smug satisfaction of "succeeding".

CSB

When I played HS football we went to some very hostile territory;  We were a central Jersey prep school and we had away games in Virginia and Upstate NY, we would roll into these schools and their entire student body would line the road to the field and locker rooms to taunt and heckle us, in Virginia they had a sign that read "Yankees go home".

But this behavior never made me want to quit,  it made me want to win more, just so they would have to eat their words.

Because nothing felt better then walking off the field pumped up from a win in enemy territory, our heads held high, staring at all the hecklers who now had nothing to say to us as we laughed and joked our way back to the buses for the long ride home.

On a related note, why haven't high school leagues had the living @#$@ sued out of them for setting up environments that encourage the routine harassment of minors?   Looks like easy money.

Coach Barry Ndynia told the Telegraph.

"But in sports that's something you have to deal with. Some people will not cheer for you. They'll cheer for your opponent. That's why I was trying to keep her focused."

What is it that we are trying to protect our kids from anyway? Bullies or adversity?

2) If you boo or otherwise heckle high school sports, you're a First Grade, Class A asshole....

Heh. He was a congressman from NH back in the 90s. A friend of mine says that when Swett would talk to visiting groups of kids, he'd lead off with a joke about his name so they wouldn't be giggling the whole time.

For sure, but I think it's worse when heckling a person in an individual sport like tennis versus team sports.

Why? The hecklers often pick out a certain person on a team to focus on.

I don't care who won either way - the Briana Leonard girl might have emotional issues, but I just don't read that quote and think the Sunday Swett girl is a good person at all.

2013-06-06 12:13:27 PM
Back in the 90s when I was in HS there was a basketball game and one of the players on the other team mother had been murdered by his father. Yeah they heckled about that. I think they gave the hecklers ISS and banned them from going to any games.

2013-06-06 12:14:00 PM
Unfortunate that it ended up that way, but the postgame interview made that Swett girl sound like an enormous biatch. Not to be mean, of course.

As no one, including the girl or her family, can point out even one example of said "bullying", I'm gonna go with the more likely snowflake scenario.

But please, continue to blame the fans for something vague and unspecific..

Got heckled at bball game once, the entire away crowd didn't understand the possession arrow and cried for it to be fixed thus stopping the game. I was stupid enough to tell them they were wrong. Silly me correcting dumbasses.

/best taunt they could muster was telling me to get a haircut. Whoa man.

2013-06-06 12:47:31 PM
A) It's different with team sports because with team sports you have a built-in support system, people who have your back, etc.
B) It's different with high schoolers because they're already in the peak of their awkwardness and self-doubt before being taunted by strangers
C) It's different with tennis because tennis players are hardly the popular kids in school like the football/basketball players
D) It's also especially weird to do it in tennis because no one f*cking watches that. I've been to a state finals in tennis...there were a maximum of 100 fans there for all the different divisions and schools combined - meaning it was pretty much family-only.

/still dunno why you'd forfeit against someone you can beat 6-1, 6-0
//or why you'd even bother finding out where your opponent lives. Who gives a sh*t?

There were a couple private schools right on the IL/IN border that I competed against in IL high school sports.  One kid in particular was a state championship threat and lived in IN.  Everyone knew, but just thought it was a little funny.  If anything, it was used to make fun of IN, in that the only way for him to competition was to come to IL.
