Hey now.  You f**k with the Wright Brothers, you f**k with Ohio.

Oh wait - people f**k with Ohio all the time, and with reason.  Carry on then.

Pics or it didn't happen.

As an outer banker (who lives a few mere miles from the WB monument) I think this is some pretty funny bullshiat. Best of luck to the fine state of Connecticut proving that they were first. Besides, I don't think the collective U.S. is going to rewrite  history & re-crown the first pilot who happens to share the same last name with a zit.

/PS - it was Kill Devil Hills, not Kitty Hawk.

Curtis on Long Island was first but big aileron is covering it up.

Can I stay at your house this summer?  Love the cape - raw ocean - I think its the sudden depth that makes it so hard core.

FirstNationalBastard: I can't believe anyone gives a flying fark.

I can't say that I'm enraged about it, but the Wright Brothers were in the air sooner with unpowered test flights, and their craft had a hell of a lot more control then anything else out there with it's wing warping technology.

They definitely deserve the honor more then some jackass from CT who built a barely controllable death trap.

History is written by the victors, not by losers in Connecticut who moan about it a century later.

Bring beer, bait & a board. Cape Hatteras is about an hour south of me. Another hour from there (via ferry - hence the hour) is Ocracoke Island. I strongly recommend Ocaracoke if you want to get really far away from humanity yet still have a few groovy bars to frequent.

It doesn't matter. Alberto Santos-Dumont flew a powered, controlled flight around the Eiffel Tower in 1901.

Everything you need to know about the article:

"I'm still absolutely convinced -- as I think most historians are -- that the Wrights were first, and Whitehead in all probability never left the ground," Tom Crouch, senior curator of aeronautics from the museum, told FoxNews.com. Besides, history is factual, not based on laws, he said.

"You don't legislate history. History is a process. People make up their minds based, I hope, on some thought given to the evidence," he said.

"And I think when people do look seriously at the evidence for the Whitehead claims, they'll see that it falls apart."

Georgia can fark themselves with an iron stick.

Gordon Bennett: It doesn't matter that Alberto Santos-Dumont flew a  powered, controlled flight in a lighter then air vehicle around the Eiffel Tower in 1901, since we are talking about heavier then air powered flight.

There, that is better.

But we're not. FTFA:

"The Governor shall proclaim a date certain in each year as Powered Flight Day to honor the first powered flight by [the Wright brothers] Gustave Whitehead and to commemorate the Connecticut aviation and aerospace industry," reads House Bill No. 6671, which now sits on the Governor's desk awaiting passage into law.

There's nothing in there about being heavier than air. And if you want to split hairs, the Wright Brothers' plane could only take off with external assistance from a launch rail and gravity. The first plane that could take off using only its own power was invented in 1906. By Alberto Santos-Dumont.

Eh, the basic dispute is between two heavier then air flights, so it is implied.

If you really want to split hairs, technically it is "powered flight" and not "powered takeoff".

Wow, my home state is getting dumber all the time. This year they seem to be cruising for mega derp. Passed terrible gun laws, now this waste of time. Id like to get out of FL, but wont be going back home thats for sure.

"Ahem...."

The irony about the Smithsonian having to defend the Wright Brothers' place in history is that for decades
they themselves denied that they were the first in favor of Langley's claim, just because Langley happened
to be the Secretary of the Smithsonian at the time.

I remeber seeing something on the news years ago about how a city in Brazil had their thongs in a wad over some guy they said was the first to have powered flight.

Was just down that way a few weeks ago. Ocra was excellent!

As for the flying thing, I doubt the claims because they suggest they used a steam engine to power it and two men were aboard. You're looking at 5-600lbs of weight. I have a hard beliving they generated the speed and lift need to carry such weight.

I'm not sure what's worse. Connecticut doing this. Or the butthurt from people in other states with even more dubious claims.

Fancy site there. He has the electronic mail and everything!

Admittedly, what's he's doing is cool. But c'mon, even something like tumblr is a step up from that.
