Smokers who litter their butts aren't real Americans anyways. They are closer to apes slinging their poo on an evolutionary scale.

Good.

And I smoke like a farking chimney. Use an ashtray you pigs.

Good. I see people throw out cigarettes from their cars all the time. Little kids pick them up, then imitate grown ups and start smoking them.

A whole new generation of smokers is born. But I'm sure the cigarette industry is just fine with that.

Has anybody said "good" yet? Because, good.

In Calgary, years ago, a careless cigarette butt was tossed from a car and it torched half a city park and killed an 8-year old boy.

A f*cking cigarette butt that some asshole was too lazy to butt out and keep in his car killed a f*cking kid.

The least you can do.

I don't even care about the littering aspect compared to the fire danger. It will degrade and return to nature a lot faster than all the beer cans I see. But goddammit you flip that thing out your car window with conditions as dry as they are, you should be dragged from the vehicle and beaten.

This. Pack a day or so smoker. If I can't find a garbage can I'll just pinch it out and put it my pocket.

Though I wish more places had these around:

I only extinguish my cigarette butts with some shaving cream

It's a fantastic idea and a great place to start for Chicago.  But really, if you want to clean that town up you're going to need a shiatload of Lysol and a wire brush before you'll even begin to make a difference.

/And that's just for the city government.  Sandblasters may be needed on the buildings and streets.

I'm down with the stiff fine, but impoundment should be reserved for litter that poses a serious risk of fire or bodily harm.

Wonder if this law will apply to bicycles.

I'm sure the upstanding members of the Chicago Police Department will never find a way to abuse this.

This is just another cash grab by the government. It has nothing to do with public safety, health, or the environment. Cigarettes break down pretty quickly and get absorbed back into the soil, so even as litter, they only exist for a day or two before disappearing completely.

I hope this makes Chicago all the money they're expecting. Otherwise, what's the point?

I like this, but I would like them a-holes to be charged with arson as well

The part about them breaking down in a day or two is wrong but the rest of what he said is spot on.

Heh, you think they do these things to make changes in the world. Silly goose

Pick up every cigarette butt off the streets of Chicago and it will still look and smell like the shiat hole it really is.

No.

Depending on some variables, it can take a few years to "disappear completely".

I was a pretty heavy smoker in college. We flicked our butts everywhere. In a day or two, the butts were gone.

You can't explain that.

Actually, you can. I already did. Biodegration.

As someone who tried very hard not to toss my butts on the ground (former smoker), I find that the punishment simply does not match the crime.

I would argue that running a stop sign is much more dangerous...

Hell, that is comparable to a first time DUI!

I assume we had to use a SCARY tag just because Fark has no AWESOME tag.  The best part about this isn't just the massive fine, but how predictably indignant a smoker would be if they ever on the receiving end of this law being enforced.

Landscaping and cleanup crews might be a better explanation.

Yes, I'm sure it was biodegradation, and not some paid cleaning crew that came around and cleaned up after you.  Why is it that all of your cigarette butts disappeared, yet every highway exit ramp manages to still be littered with hundreds of them?

Eat a few cigarette butts.  In a day or two you'll feel better.

Cigs take longer than two days but even so why does that matter? My shiat prob does take 2 days...ok to dump out my car?

If input exceeds output, you'll get a backlog.

Is it especially attractive? No, but as they only last a couple days out there, it's not really that big a deal.

As someone who lives in a desert and has had too many close calls with wildfires started with cigarette butts almost burning my house down. I'd be quite happy if the punishment was being drawn and quartered in front of their family. If my life has to be ruined because a jackass can't use a ashtray in their car, so should theirs and or their next of kin.

/yes I know "just move out of the desert then"

I've had to stop on the side of the road and let my kid take a crap on the ground. It's not especially nice, but it's not the end of the world. I assume you're an adult and can plan ahead and wait until the next rest stop.

What I don't get is how some people view the world as their trash can.  That I just don't understand.

Either stupid or troll: you decide.

How long do you think acetate takes to break down?

I agree with the fine, but impounding the vehicle is going a little too far.
