Looks like it started out in Cuba.

Say hello...

/I like the way the local news site basically says, "Well, at least it's going to hit Florida and not us."

2013-06-05 08:08:03 PM
June 5th?  Ugh.  Not looking forward to this season.

NOAA predicts a bad one.  I have family in Sarasota, but this one doesn't look too bad at least.

They ALWAYS predict a bad one.

I'm just glad the damn sun is gone for awhile.

Hello, tropical storm Andrea!

2013-06-05 09:07:56 PM
It looks like it will pass by overnight Thurs/Friday. I'd love a good rain, but don't mess with my power, Andrea.

2013-06-05 09:12:04 PM
I thought hurricane season was over

2013-06-05 09:13:04 PM
I'm in St. Pete, we'll see how this goes I guess. Shouldn't be bad here, just wet.

downstairs: June 5th?  Ugh.  Not looking forward to this season.

Last two years we had one hurricane make landfall each year. Irene and Sandy. Both caused unexpected severe damage. And yhey were farking cat 1s.

This is gonna suck.

2013-06-05 09:16:08 PM
Right in the way of this one, which I'm fine with, we could use the rain.

2013-06-05 09:16:14 PM
Is it pronounced ANN-dree-ah, or AHN-dree-ah??

an-DRAY-ah

2013-06-05 09:17:36 PM
Now is it pronounced "ANN- dree-ah" or the more pretentious "Ahn-DRAY-ah"?

And Isaac.

My first thought was "meh" because big deal, another named storm. Then I realized it was hurricane season and named storms means something. Good job weather channel abusing the idea.

2013-06-05 09:19:32 PM
Went from crap in the Gulf to tropical storm and skipped the tropical depression stage.  It wont be bad but still sucks that it happened so soon.  We shouldn't see much of this on the southeast coast of Florida where I'm at.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of the NHC/NOAA memo from ~10 or so years ago which said "In the interest of public awareness" they were going to name more marginal systems?  I do remember reading it, but unfortunately I didn't keep a copy.  Rick Knabb, current NHC director, was there as a junior forecaster at the time.

Of course, they never thought about the consequences.  More named storms = higher insurance rates and more people lulled into a false sense of security since they've been though a few named storms and they were jokes.

This thing is a Tropical Mess™ , not worthy of being given a name.

clearwater area here it's supposed to basically just rain a bit and meh. debbie last year had a bigger impact cause it was stronger and stalled out just off-shore for DAYS

Well, the sawgrass is blooming heavy right now in the glades... The crackers say that means a bad season.

Yeah pretty much this.  Although today in Clearwater/Tarpon -- oy it's so humid!

Hi Andrea!
... that didn't sound right =/

2013-06-05 09:34:29 PM
Rain and wind? In Florida?

/why is this named anything but "Thursday"?

Confabulat: I'm just glad the damn sun is gone for awhile.

Ditto. I should have mowed my front yard this last weekend in between the rains.

Oh well.

2013-06-05 09:35:55 PM
I know they are predicting a bad season, but hurricanes are all about the water temperature, and we did have a really cold spring.  I also wouldn't mind a busy season, with lots of little storms that were constantly zapping that energy out of the ocean.  Little hurricanes are no big deal.  It's when they get to be a Cat. 3 that you got to worry.

2013-06-05 09:39:19 PM
At the rate things are going this should be interesting. I'm glad I'm on the west coast. Well, at least until the Rip 9 comes to town. Or Mt Hood blows. Either one of those will suck.

2013-06-05 09:40:08 PM
Maybe no work tomorrow!

AHN-dree-ah.

Shostie: nekom: NOAA predicts a bad one.

Really? 'Cos they predicted a "near normal" one last year. And a "milder" one in 2009.

More likely, you are simply experiencing a selective bias and only recall the years in which they predict more active hurricane seasons, particularly when they do so incorrectly.

Darkviking: I may be moving to Tampa and I'm not getting a kick....

I'm in Tampa. We haven't been hit by a major hurricane in 90-some years. So I guess we're due?

Like someone said above, Cat 1-2 aren't a big deal around here generally, unless you live right on the beach or maybe in a trailer.

Around here we have fires, not storms.  Every year it's always one of "We had more rain than usual over the winter, so there is more dry brush to burn, so we expect a higher than average fire danger".  Contrast to "We had less rain than usual over the winter, so the brush is dryer and we expect a higher than average fire danger".

Unless you live up north, then tropical storm="superstorm".

/St. Pete here

We went through one season where we had to resort to the Greek alphabet so ... meh.
