Participation in the three-day events has declined 37 percent over the last four years, according to the group.

But that didn't stop their biatch of a CEO from getting an insane raise this year.

You mean to say that when a charitable organization centered around curing X decides to oppose group Y who is part of preventing X because of reasons unrelated to the preventing of X and unrelated to general problems with Y, people will pull their support?

Say it ain't so.

/didn't donate to Komen this year for this very reason
//probably wont for a long time

Fark Komen.  They are more interested in protecting trademarks than helping fund research.  They are in the same league as MADD - completely divorced from their original mission.  I won't tell you how to give away your charity buck but you can find a better one than Komen.

I always thought the whole minimum donation thing was nonsense. If someone wants to help the cause, you say "thank you" and appreciate they want to make the effort to help you.

Maybe Komen shouldn't have crossed their primary demographic by putting ideology over their mission.

Dunno, I think it's about awareness, but it's not like there is anyone unaware of breast cancer.  But walking and advertisement can be used to raise funds for good programs.  Shameless plug for fundraising walk in my profile.

JonZoidberg: They are in the same league as MADD - completely divorced from their original mission

Yep. Komen has shifted from cancer research to hyperconservatism. Just like MADD went from getting people to take cabs to being nothing short of Neoprohibitionists who advocate illegal search and seizure, or how the Tea Party went from lowering taxes to being a Christian Fundamentalist movement, or how Peta went from speaking out against animal cruelty to pushing an insane, sexist and Anti-science agenda.

So, just another American 501c rewriting their mission statement and becoming meaningless.

I've always wondered why fund raising towards breast cancer seems to drastically outweigh other cancers.

I get it, I like boobs as much as the next man; we know the treatment though.  Cut them ladies off.  Meanwhile we have cancers where we have no treatment options other than chemo, where you nearly nuke the entire body in the sheer hopes that you get the cancer before you get the rest of the patient.

Not trying to be an asshole, but my funding goes to where it seems to really be needed:  asscancer.

Sadly, it's fairly common for otherwise normal organizations to get taken over by zealots who are completely divorced (or barely in touch) from the original mission.

They don't even have to be political/ideological organizations like MADD, the Tea Party or PETA.  Just look at your local HOA.

Sorry, my friend, but the market has spoken. And they think an organization that wants to "Save the Ta-Tas" while at the same time defunding women's health is stupid. This is not "Partisan Politcs", you disingenous shill, this is common sense. It's like an organization dedicated to the sale of Pepperoni but at the same time working to ban Pizza in America. Do you see how that works?

CSB time

A friend of mine works at a venue where Komen had a walkabout recently and he says it was a complete clusterfark, nobody had a clue how to manage a crowd, there was not one single medical personnel on the entire route and when the fire Marshall discovered they didn't even have single permit for the event he went ballistic. The only reason he didn't shut the whole thing down was because he was afraid of any bad publicity. He tells me that Komen will NEVER be allowed back to the venue under any circumstance!

Komen is too busy splashing pink on everything to bother fulfilling their mission.  On average about 21 percent of funds collected are actually given as research funds.
Find a more deserving organization to support.

I works just like prayer. Except with the walking all of the mewling couch sows wander around for a few days with the other mewling couch sows. The couch sows like to hug each other, cry and use the word "empowered" a lot. There are couch sows that don't walk but they give the weeping walking couch sows money so the queen sow will be appeased. The queen sow then uses the money to market pink stuff to sell the couch sows that already gave her money and wandered around for a few days. And that's how it cures tittie lumps.

This is why I hate the IRS "Scandal". I think that 501c's should come under greater scruitiny. I mean, I think 501c groups should come under complete review every 2 years, and basically have to show the IRS and the Federal Government how their group is the same as the original intention of the Non-Profit. With that level of scruitiny, pretty much all the 501c's I've talked about would have their tax-exempt status revoked.

Shoot. There's not even an Internet reference to "melon line".

Farm workers would line up next to a truck in a field of watermelons. The picker would toss the watermelon to the next guy, he would toss it to the next guy in line. Eventually the guy on the other end of the melon line would catch the melon and heave up to a guy in the back of the truck. Repeat endlessly.

Holy shiat.  I didn't know that.  So if 20% goes to actual research, why not just avoid the hassle and donate $460 to actual research or give it to someone who has breast cancer?

That analogy works if the last guy cuts 60% of the melon off to keep before he puts it on the truck.

Hate to see it happen, but that is what you get when you politicized your supposedly non-political charity.

I am betting that it was an open secret at Komen that Karen Handel was doing a lot more than focusing on raising money and running the charity. She had an agenda that was well known when she was hired and it should have been no surprise when the Planned Parenthood dust-up happened. Then things got really out of hand and it all spiraled out of control at light speed. Still, while she had a clear hand in the problem, I have a hard time believing that there were not others at Komen (and probably are still there) who escaped scrutiny because the wolves had taken down the big prey.

The craziest part (and I really should not be surprised by this) was after Handel was fired, she came out with a book calling Komen "blatantly partisan." and thugs when it was she who was the ringleader of the thug partisanship.

Exactly. Which is why people went bananas when Komen was using money to do other things (Especially funding efforts AGAINST women's health) besides Breast Cancer research. It was barely a charitable organization to begin with, and now it's just as, one-in-the-chamber says:

Politics & Power
Just a daily read of fark poltics and you'll see that most here don't mind the leash around the neck, just matters who holding the leash.
This how the Komen Org. becomes a villain in one act. While PP continues despite all their abuses of power and scandals.

I do hope you know that's not the only treatment for breast cancer. And losing a boob to cancer is traumatic for a more than a few reasons, including that everybody will notice when you're not filling out your blouse like you used to.  Or if it looks like you got one real one and one falsie. Eww.

Meanwhile we have cancers where we have no treatment options other than chemo, where you nearly nuke the entire body in the sheer hopes that you get the cancer before you get the rest of the patient.
