I'm surprised they took a break from repealing Obamacare to do this. Seriously, do they only have two settings? It's like "Duck Season, Wabbit Season" with them.

This will never come to a vote in the Senate and would be vetoed by the President if it did.

This is an excellent use of taxpayer money.

By a party line vote of 6-4, the House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice approved a bill that would ban abortions nationwide after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act is based on

The writer really should've just ended that sentence with a question mark.

that goes for the previous 38 repeals of obamacare. this is pure political theater. and it's costing millions and hobbling the economy. but then again, that's exactly what republicans want.

Isn't there already a federal ban on abortions after a certain timeframe (which I thought was 21 weeks)?

"The trial of Kermit Gosnell exposed late abortions for what they really are: relocated infanticide," Frank said Tuesday in a statement. "I pray we use this as a 'teachable moment,' in the words of President Obama, and can agree that, at the very least, we are better than dismembering babies who can feel every excruciating moment."

Kermit Gosnell was sentenced to life in prison under existing law.

How's that for a teachable moment?

Agreed.  Seems doubtful that Rep. Franks would view Sandy Hook as a "teachable moment" about gun control.

2013-06-05 04:45:07 PM
Ehh, I guess Sandy Hook is a kind of bad example on that, since the dude killed himself and all.  We're probably safe to assume that he would have been convicted if apprehended.

Healthy, live birth, obviously not.  But, if viable fetuses can survive a birth that early, it's probably not a big stretch to say they are experiencing pain by 20 weeks.

2013-06-05 04:48:47 PM
I was under the impression that fetuses don't even have a recognizable consistent brainwave pattern until at least the mid-20ish weeks.  So even if their pain receptors fire, there's still no conciousness in there to feel it.  Also, I'm not convinced that "pain" is really that good of a benchmark for arguing against a medical procedure.

My sister works in a a NICU.  have you ever seen a 1lb baby?  I have.  If a baby sirvives at 22 weeks, at a minimum tey will be blind, have severe respitory difficulties from under developed lungs..assorted organ problems and almost certainly be severely mentally retarded.

2013-06-05 04:53:32 PM
A republican politician from Washington State is going to have a baby. It will die a painful death at birth as its lungs will not be developed, due to deformity.

I would be willing to support a ban on abortion if:

A) Comprehensive sexual health education is taught in every, single, school, religious ones included, at an early age and on a recurring basis AND,
B) All forms of birth control are covered 100% by insurance, including standard condoms AND,
C) Effective, safe child-care is taxpayer funded and funding for education is dramatically increased.

So basically I'm pro choice.

Being blind, breathless, and retarded sucks. On the bright side, though, they're eminently qualified to be a member of the House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.

Glad to see the GOP is using its work time wisely.

Meaningful governance? fark that - we need focus on passing pointless, unconstitutional bills that will go nowhere, because the Constitution mandates that the House of Representatives spend 99% of its time doing grandstanding bullshiat.

As I said, dude from Aurora (is the Sideshow Bob nickname worn out already?) hasn't been convicted yet.  He just plead insanity yesterday.
But yeah, I had forgotten just how many people Loughner shot.  Somehow it always came across in my head as him just shooting Giffords, not anybody else.
