Future husbands can be revealed anywhere and at any time. For Connie Cawley, inspiration came when she was in the sixth grade. Once her science teacher, Michael is now her husband.

Most of the girls in my middle school would have been betrothed to New Kids on the Block.

What 16 year old girl wouldn't jump at the chance to marry a 50 year old autocrat?

I don't have a problem with polygamy. I do have a problem with brainwashing, however, and far too often those two things go together.

The problem is that there are more women than men so the competition is fixed and brutal.

Anyway, in the end, you're all going to be Mormons, whether you like it or not.

James!: The problem is that there are more women than men so the competition is fixed and brutal.

Other way round  which leads to the dirty little Utah secret of "The Lost Boys"  almost unconsciously, Polygamist sects in the west often behave just like  herd animals.  the Dominant males get to breed and the lesser males are driven off.  When one man has 10 + wives some 20-30 years younger than him, it doesn;t leave a lot avaialble eligible wives for the younger men.     In practice what this means is that all but a favored few of the Younger genration of men bron into such compound societies get friven off or excommunicated for minor offense shortly after they hit puberty and are often driven out of the communities ot fend for themselves at 14, 15 or 16 years old.  A lot of them end up homeless in Salt lake city or elsewhere.. and if they're lucky , end up as wards of the state in foster care, it they're not?  Well...

I highly recoomend the book Under the Banner of Heaven by journalist Jon Krakaeur, for an really interesting read that provides a lot of detail and insight into what life is like in the FLDS communities in UT Colorado Nevada etc, particualrly for the women.

This scenario totally sets up Freud's idealized Oedipus Complex. One day a 18 y.o. is going to shoot up his dad and take the women for himself.

And that is exactly why the males are driven off by age 14.

I watched a good documentary about the FLDS church not long ago.  There really is no word other than cult that describes them.  My only real problem with this is the children involved.  If it's consenting adults, go be in a cult, I don't care, but there ought to be some protection for children from this sort of thing.

Sometimes I get lost in daydreaming and wishing I was a fundamentalist Mormon with 5 wives.

And then I wake up and realize that most fundamentalist Mormons quite homely, and it takes 5 of them put together to equal the attractiveness of one normal woman.

Nothing stopping them from going the Afghan route and boning young boys while claiming not only that they aren't gay, but that they'll kill any gay person they meet.

And this is where things gt really hinky for me.  Gay marriage opponents aften say "well if you are for gay marriage then you must be for Polygamy too" expecting us to recoil in horror at that and undermine the whole marriage equality argument.

Not me.  If peole want any form of plural marriage, be it Poly -Gamy -Andry or -Amory, I'm totally fine with it, so long as it's consensual and everybody knows what's going on.  And there's the rub: How do you determine consent in the case of  a girl who, while she may be over the legal marrying age (which can be as young as 14 in some places like the southern backwater state of MD),, has nonetheless lived her whole life being taught to regard the person telling her to marry as the living voice of God?  Someone who knows she will be completely cut off from her family and literally every one she knows if she says "no"?   Add to that the fact that in some places the Local church leader is also theelected  Superintendent of the local PUBLIC school, and some of the places maintian Taliban-like restrictions on watching TV or movies.  How can say any person in that environment is legally giving consent?  And yet how can you forbid that without running afoul of the 14th and 1st Amendments?

Hard to condense all that into a little soundbite or slogan, isn't it?  I think I agree with you for the most part.  The only difference between polygamy and gay marriage is that it DOES change the legal arrangement somewhat, what was formerly an exclusive contract entered into by two natural persons (which holds true if those two persons are gay) and REALLY muddies up things legally.  For example, say I marry 3 women.  Are they legally married to each other, or only to me?  What if I divorce one?  What if I die, who gets my stuff?  It muddies the waters, but that could probably be worked out.  Morally, I have NO problem whatsoever with polygamy among consenting adults.

But then, yes, how exactly do you even define consensual in a cult-like environment?  Say I have sex with a severely mentally retarded adult woman.  Could I be prosecuted for rape, or can I say hey she didn't say no?  Personally, I think that's a rape right there.

I happened across Polygamy, USA quite by accident (channel surfing + job hunting on the tablet.) It is SO much this. I caught another episode after seeing the last half of the first. In the second one I saw, one of this guy's little girls studying for her baptism (that in and of itself is foreign to me since, being Methodist with Catholic roots happens in the first 0-30 days.) He's sitting on the bed with her, asking these questions about their "religion." It just sends home the message that it IS brain-washing and, for the most part, none of these individuals are able to rise against it because they ingrain it in their children and they isolate themselves completely. No internet, no TV. Seems the only ones to escapes are the kids who TRULY rebel/leave.

I need to start my own religion... Tax exemption and all that. If what's-his-face can do it, so can I.

It is interesting to think of what Jesus would think of contemporary Christianity.  I am also curious as to what Dumbledore would think of how Harry dealt with Voldemort.

There would be a lot of smiting involved... plus all the people so damn sure they were going to be part of "da Rapture!" would suddenly find they are part of the Left Behind series.

You should care.  These brave polygamists are trying to protect their right to live as they please and to combat stereotyping of their religion.  The same as brave anti-vaccine folks who are trying to protect their right to kill others and to combat herd immunity.

Part of the welfare and medical fraud is due to the children born in in-bred families. They are kids that basically are raised in a basket because they are so deformed or have so many medical issues they can barely function.  This is very common in those communities.

That part of Arizona is just weird.

/Love the rest of northern Arizona though.

If I understand correctly, in the eyes of the law only one of the women is legally married to the husbands with the rest being essentially live in girlfriends.  They amount to single mothers, and on paper are eligible for various kinds of assistance.  If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will set me straight.
