Without reading the rest of the thread, THIS^^^.

I actually have a real problem with someone getting thrown in jail for 10 years for growing a perfectly natural substance that is hurting no one, and actually has many benefits.  Here in NJ, they actually legalized medicinal pot, but labs have nowhere to grow it, because the gov't may have allowed it, but won't allow it to be grown.

The war on drugs has completely destroyed FAR more lives than it's saved.  And that's not even counting the amount of people that get shot up in the black market trade.

Goddam, the gov't is stupid and short sighted.

Yeah, it's fairly well known that's a significant tip-off to the authorities.   Since they can't just look around with a thermal imaging camera without a warrant, this is the next best thing.  If you're spending a bunch of money on electricity without some logical explanation, and you're paying with cash, the utility company is probably going to let the police know about it.

Same in MA, the voters forced through a medical cannabis law and the state promptly neutered it so nobody can legally grow it but the dispensaries that won't exist for 3 or 4 years.

Double edged sword. Electrical companies usually will look the other way unless either A) records requested from police or B) you don't pay the bill on time. What's better? An empty warehouse or a steady guaranteed $5,000 a month?

the solution is doing exactly what she was doing but not tell people about her operation, the problem isn't the power company it's the person who ratted her out to avoid a charge against them.

Good question.

One way would be to generate your own electricity.  Find a place out in the sticks, and use a generator or generators to power the grow lamps.   You can buy diesel from numerous different places and it won't be considered suspicious.

One way you could spread out the purchases is to get a diesel truck with a big fuel tank.  Fill it up at station A, go to your grow operation, siphon off most of it into your generator tank, then go out for a fuel run to station B, etc.  No single purchase is enough to arouse suspicion, and since gas stations don't usually talk to each other, there won't be anyone who can discern a pattern of high fuel use unless they start looking at you for other reasons.

that's what happened in this case, once the cops are looking into you you're farked no matter how you get your power so you might as well just plug in your lights.

A few problems with this approach.

1. Generators are loud
2. They leak
3. They are a big tip off for anyone who knows what to look for

What she needed to do was this
1. DON'T TELL ANYONE
2. Dont be greedy - keep your grow small but efficient
3. Use LED lights
4. Have a good charcoal filter for odors
5. DON'T TELL ANYONE

Yeah, but generally you won't know when they start looking at you, so the best course of action is to maintain.

If you do happen to find out ahead of any actual action, the best thing is to probably just drop everything and leave the jurisdiction.

Yes.

And What she should have been doing is STEALING the power. If she was stealing the juice she wouldn't have been pinched by the power company. They would have known there was an issue in the area but they would have no way of knowing who was stealing the power. This is why major grows tend to steal power. They can pay for it like this lady did but the risk is the cops come knocking

The LED lights are a real solution. Low power consumption, low heat transmittance and you dont need as many to throw light in the same space. If you are running LED you only really run the risk of someone running their mouth

If they don't, just use more of them.  It turns out that you only need to provide red and blue light to get most of a plant's growth potential, hence why the light in the picture is purple.  I've read articles about people looking into urban farming of legal foods with stacks of plants 20 layers high, floor to ceiling, lit completely with red and blue LEDs.

Short answer - yes. Long answer - you want to make sure you have the right spectrum balance and because LED lights are so new there is still some debate about that.

Cops are not really the ones to fear. They (usually) wont shoot you before they take all your weed.

and heres another

4. They break down - a lot. I had a neighbor who was a diesel gen repair guy in Southern Humboldt. The growers paid him well because he kept his mouth shut but he got into some weird damn situations involving the Russian Mafia. He doesnt drink or smoke and so there were some trust issues. Finding a mechanic you can trust to fix your car is hard enough. Finding one you trust to let near your professional grow is even tougher.

Outdoor grows have their own problems too.  The main one being that they're very visible from the air.  You can mitigate that somewhat, but it's an inherent issue.

Quite true but you can see diesel gen from the air too. And now with infrared.....   Generally the only people who do large indoor grows in the sticks are seriously farking scary people. They are always heavily armed and their grows are guarded by a combination of unpleasant obstacles. Everything from geese to booby traps to  bitter men with machetes who speak very little English.

Its been a long time since the professional grow scene was a bunch of peace loving hippies. And of course typically the cops leave the pros alone unless the locals get upset and make enough noise about all the diesel in their well water.
