dc0012c: I think one of the big problems with the US Top Gear is that it removed an important basic feature of the show, which is to provide snarky, but intelligent, testing and reviews of cars.

this is tough to do on american commercial television without pissing off sponsors. this is why it works so well on the bbc, which does not take commercial advertising.

sab6300: Comparing the UK and US versions of the show isn't really fair.  The UK version is in its 20ish season, and is a well oiled machine.  I think the US version is only in its second season, and it you remember the first 2 seasons, of this version of UK Top Gear, were almost unwatchable.  They didn't have Captain Slow or Hammond, just some fat dude and Jeremy.

To me Clarkson makes the entire show and it would be hard to find someone like him for the US version, it would need to be someone with a really sharp tongue.  At one time they talked about Jay Leno doing a Top Gear like show, and he might have the stupidity factor down but fails in the quick wit department.

//My vote for best episode goes to the Vietnam one

The real key is the writing. Clarkson was one of Britain's best automotive journalists long before they rebooted Top Gear. If the American version was written by some of the sharper writers at Car & Driver, you could make it work with any decent standup comics who like cars. It still would lack the British show's edge, because you couldn't actually pan bad cars (check how all U.S. automotive magazines walk on eggshells in their reviews), so it probably would still suck, just not as hard as it does now.

No your thinking of the Renault Twingo they took to Belfast. The Fiasta was the one that had the chase of the shopping centre then ended with the Royal Marine beach assault.
