Her parents might want to buy some new film for their Olympus 35 RC.

Fined $1000 to get her diploma? Apart from putting it in a frame and hanging it on the wall what do you actually need a diploma for? Do employers ask to see the actual document?

2013-06-04 08:39:48 PM
FTA...The school sent a contract for graduating seniors to sign before the May 23 event, but Ramer told the station she never signed it. Escambia is now withholding her diploma until she pays the fine.

Okay, even if she had signed the contract, how would it be legally binding? She's 17 and still considered a minor by law.

Not that I'm aware of. And I'm not sure the fine was in exchange for the diploma or not. And in other news: schools can fine you??

Private "Christian" school.

2013-06-04 08:47:15 PM
On one hand, she wasn't supposed to wear it, asked permission and was denied. It's hardly "discrimination".

On the other: a $1,000 "fine", or else the school withholds the diploma? What a bunch of assholes.

On the third hand, it's a private school in Alabama... who gives a shiat.

She could still be intelligent, despite the enormous handicap.

Since it's a private school, I'm assuming they can get away with it.

However young lady, go tell to fark a rusty corkscrew. You will not ever need that piece of paper. Mine's been buried in a desk at my parent's house since I graduated in 2004. Any job won't need to ask your for it since they either a) won't care or b) will find it as part of your background check.

Aaand there you have it.

Maybe ask for an invoice and use that as a transcript?  I'd have to assume colleges/employers would be on her side with this one.

1.  She knew what the deal was.   "About two months ago, me and the other Indian seniors from the graduating class asked our headmaster if we could wear the feathers on our caps," Ramer  told Indian Country Today Media Network. "She told us 'no' and that if we did, she would pull us off the field"

2.  It isn't an issue that what had she signed the contract that it was a legally binding contract. It is used to show that you knew the rules.

Because of state licensure requirements, my employer requires proof of highest level of education completed.
Copy of High School Diploma
G.E.D.
College Transcripts (but Diploma doesn't count for college education).

It's a bit silly but we have to keep them on file to show State licensure agents if they ask to see it.
We also cannot promote employees if they don't have the right level of education. Even if they have 20+ years experience.

2013-06-04 09:39:32 PM
Also, I wonder if this would fall under any religious discrimination clauses?  It seems like it could be similar to telling a Christian they can't wear a cross at graduation.

Doubt it.
Employer:  "Why don't you have a diploma?"
Her:  "Oh they were discriminatory"
...
calls school to check:
School:  "oh, she specifically did something that we told her she couldn't do"
Emplorer:  "okay, next job application".

2013-06-04 09:41:51 PM
Yeah, she asked to wear it, they told her no but she did it anyway. Then they let her walk with the feather. A $1000 fine? I'd tell them to fark off.

2013-06-04 09:42:01 PM
I've had jobs where I've had to produce a high school diploma (despite giving them a college degree).  Assuming the school is accredited, she should be able to get a state diploma with her name on it.  The school can't deny her that, just the one from their institution.

Having an American Indian heritage is a religion now?
Do you know what it means to wear a feather in your headdress?
(check Elizabeth Warren's book if you don't know the meaning).

It seems like it could be similar to telling a Christian they can't wear a cross at graduation.

Or completely not.

Parochial schools sure can. The one I went to (fark you, Seventh Day Adventist Church) declared that you couldn't have a radio or tape player in your possession (fine = $25.) They had fines for other stuff, too, like bringing a can of Coca-Cola on campus. Furthermore, they used forced, unpaid (slave) labor as punishment for more egregious stuff like not keeping your room clean. or getting caught smooching your GF one too many times (all physical contact was banned.) How they got away with the "free labor," I'm not sure.

Sometimes I wonder why I'm not more farked up than I am after enduring that place. Mercifully, the SDAs closed/sold it in the 90s and is now a high school orphanage run by the county.

Perhaps this young lady isn't ready to graduate.

Remember, remove the other people and see if it sounds right.

Make her write a 100 page single-spaced paper on the history and genealogy of her tribe in 12th grade language. That'll learn her.

the head master claims he would give the diploma if he could, but he has to go through the board first.

SAT question: how many board members are about to "resign?" How many?

So you and Elizabeth Warren are qualified to speak on behalf of this girl's religious beliefs because.....?

We didn't get diplomas when we walked just a slip of paper that allowed you to pick it up the next day. They didn't want to be "off" if someone was a no show. Needless to say I got really messed up that night and didn't pick it up the next day or any day there after. It's been over 20 years and I haven't needed it yet. That being said did the school gave an all out ban on decorating their morterboards? When I graduated some people used tape to write messages or put flowers on them and there was no problem.

This.

Number of times someone has required my high school transcript: I dunno; several, at any rate, and as recent as a few years back.

Number of times anyone has asked to see my high school diploma: two; my parents. 25 years ago. Once.

2013-06-04 09:52:48 PM
OK.  So let me get this straight.  She blatantly broke the rules... she got caught... now she's crying discrimination.  I say $1000 is a cheap high school diploma, because, quite frankly, she's too damn stupid to graduate.

I still say 'Remove all the warning signs, and let Darwin sort out our population problem.'

Given it's Alabama, I assume the restriction is to keep kids from having a confederate flag displayed as part of their heritage.

so to graduate school in Alabama means you don't understand the word NO?
