umad: Surool: Turning that sh*t off isn't much to ask. Why do people whine about it so much?

Because if I wanted to follow arbitrary rules with no basis in reality, I would go to church.

Don't fly then. It isn't your constitutional right. You play by the rules of f*ck off and drive. Until then, your simpering gets you nothing.

Could you teach me to be as cool, interesting and as original as you are?

Doubtful.

TNel: "Wielgus said she would understand if individual students who were not complying had been asked to leave, but she objected to the collective punishment. "

That sounds great, so lets call up the parents and hold the entire flight up for a few hours for them to get there or have 7 people to control 100 students.  Sorry you should have told your students to stop messing around and sit and listen.

Now she knows what kind of asshat behavior it is when teachers do it also.

Really, fr a group that large, they should have just ejected the ones misbehaving. But if that group included chaperones (of which there were too few), then the entire group would have to go I suppose.

Befuddled: When people get kicked off a flight, does the airline refund them the cost of the ticket or tell them that they're SOL? I would think the airline would tell them that they're SOL as those seats could have been filled with paying customers if they hadn't bought tickets in the first place.

Airline tickets are non refundable.

Especially after your boarded the plane and had them torn in half, then needed to be escorted off the plane for acting like terrorists.

They ejected the one group that was misbehaving. It happened to be a group of 109.

Honest Bender: My GED in aeronautical safety?  LOL.  All you need is a baseline understanding of electronics and a little bit of knowledge.  I'm still waiting to hear your explanation of how a device certified by the federal government NOT to interfere with other electronics is going to interfere with the electronics of the plane.

If my phone didn't interfere with other electronics, its 3G, wifi and bluetooth capabilities would be a tad restricted.

Satanic_Hamster: Some people can never accept or admit to others that they were being a douchebag.  It's always the OTHER person and they were doing it because of some imagined reason; they're jealous, they hate that gender of person, they hate <religious group>, they hate people smarter then them, etc etc.

Those people are called "Americans", and it's the reason most of the rest of the world hates us.  This is our stereotype.  Like it or not, this is how the world views us.  Self-entitled assholes who are never to blame for their own actions, and sue and slander to protect our own precious images.

GET OFF MY PLANE!

Been on a 9 hr night flight with a lot of Japanese high school students in uniform, on a trip from Tokyo to Sydney. VERY WELL BAHAVED. Even my 3yr old listened to the flight attendant.

Gaumond: While I am sure their are cases of overreacting flight staff for the most part people treat airline personnel like shiat and I really do feel sorry for them, especially ticket counter personnel. There are numerous occasions have wanted to tell that person yelling at them to STFU and sit down.

Ticket counter people might get treated like shiat. Attendants don't. They will farking bounce you from a flight in a heartbeat. Dont fark with them.

The best part is that I usually don't even use it during the flight. I only do it so I can tell idiots like you about it and watch your heads explode. I love farking with ignorant people.

d3: Fark AirTran! They are the same @$$-holes that changed our flight itinerary  while we were in the air and without telling us and then gave the passengers attitude when we were pissed about it.

Heh...wasn't AirTran, but a couple years back a buddy of mine was trying to fly home to NYC, and his airline (I forget which one) just up and cancelled his leg of the trip back east, since he was the only one on it.  Left him in some godforsaken midwestern airport at 2 AM; he said the only people there were hookers and cops, although, being the Midwest, they were friendly hookers and cops...

Confabulat: And it's a lovely message for the school to blame the airline, instead of their own rotten students that can't behave like adults for a few damn minutes. If you can't behave on an airplane, you don't belong on one. You don't get a second chance to shut up and sit down and turn off your phone. You do it or get the hell off.

They PAID for that airplane. This was 109 of the 137 people on board.

skullkrusher: Pfighting Polish: Religion aside, the mere fact that you have a group of 100-plus kids who can afford to take a plane on a senior trip to go rafting and to Six Flags screams spoiled brats.

flying to Atlanta from NY for a rafting and amusement park trip isn't exactly St Tropaz

It's also not taking an hour-long yellow-bus trip to ride a few rollercoasters, either.

tripleseven: jst3p: tripleseven: On a flight recently, I saw the stewardess tell a kid three farking times to shut off his hone for landing.  Each time, he nodded, then continued to ignore her.

Really, it's not hard to be without your phone for 20 minutes.

Oh, yeah, and before the internet electrical engineer brigade gets on here to tell me that "it's no big deal"  well, I suppose, but lets just say something did happen, would you want to be the assfark who just killed 100 people cause you didn't want to listen?

If it were possible for a cell phone to bring down a plane they would require that they be checked. Your "what if" is silly.

And it's your snowflake like belief that your desires outweigh a federally mandated rule, that was put in place for good reason.  Lets put it this way, people who likely more well versed in electrical engineering than you have deemed it is unsafe, and they have backed it up a regulation.  Until the regulation is removed, please stop believing your ideas trump the safety of others.

The rule is for passenger and crew safety in an emergency, which are much more likely during takeoff and landing. So that pax can hear the safety spiel, and if something does go wrong are paying attention to crew instructions. Not to mention that other pax don't wanna hear you chat on your damn cell for the entire flight.

In no way could a cellphone take down an aircraft.

let me repeat .. In no way could a cellphone take down an aircraft.

It would be way to easy to mod a phone for much higher than normal RF output, get a couple on board and wreak havoc.

Pilots even have permission to use RF devices (cellphones/tablets)  while in flight.

2013-06-05 02:25:15 PM

Mr. Coffee Nerves: Only once in all my flights have I ever seen the pilot leave the cockpit to tell an asspipe "turn the phone off or you're gone" so I can only imagine the shrieking tube of misery this plane must have been to inspire such a forced exodus.

Heh... you said "exodus"

unless the person is using the cell phone or RF device to remotely set off an explosive, like the Boston marathon bombers did.  then a cell phone could certainly take down an aircraft.

Getting an explosive on the plane is a different problem.

I recall articles from 2002ish that basically stated that the problem with cellphone usage on planes was related to, of all things, billing.   Which cell company gets to bill for the call?   Typically the company where the call starts gets to charge, but in a plane, a single phone call can cross multiple areas, and those other companies need to be paid (somehow) for their infrastructure being used.   SO, the issue is not truly FAA, but...FCC.

/or was that an onion column?

2013-06-05 03:15:00 PM

Jument: It would be interesting to see what other passengers thought went down.

But for that you'd have to read the article, so never mind.

Yeah OK. Because normal teenagers can go to normal schools.

If you have to go to a school exclusive for your ethnicity or religion, then you're not normal.

I never said I thought a phone affects the plane's systems, I asked about what studies were done. I've also said I don't understand why people can't turn off for a couple hours. So, I'm not sure who you thought you were arguing with, but you look more retarded as you go.
