(BBC)   Sure, the Finns put babies in boxes and get praised for having one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates. I put a baby in a box and suddenly I'm "grossly misusing the US postal system"   (bbc.co.uk ) divider line

dragonchild: This is one of those excellent ideas that, if implemented in the U.S., would be politicized, undermined, corrupted, taken over and turned into a steaming pile of corporate welfare before the bill had even left committee.

In America every inch of the box would be covered in advertisements and filled with coupons for disposable diapers, baby formula, and Disney DVDs.

You know, when I was a new parent, I would have loved something like that.

Actually, that's not technically true:  The littlebopper was a "Safe Haven" baby, and as such he was our foster child, and so we did get things like free formula (and later, solid food) from WIC, a decent diaper and clothing allowance, free daycare, and in addition the county was paying us a daily rate to take care of him, right up until the day we adopted him.

But if we had had a more normal path into parenthood, the distaffbopper and I would have loved a bunch of coupons for diapers and formula.

Sidoko: Meanwhile the US has the highest infant mortality rate in the developed world.

But, hey, SOCIALISM!

Well, to be fair, parts of the country, such as the Appalachians, Detroit, Alabama, are more like the third world than the 1st world.

Also, some enterprising people could make money with selling these ready-made baby care packages to people in other countries.
