What? No.

Well if I were black I would think I would want to take advantage of ways to escape my life as well

yes troll headline is trolly i realize that

2013-06-04 08:47:23 AM
Is that so? In that case, I have changed my position and now believe that all marijuana possession should be a class A felony.

2013-06-04 08:47:27 AM
They must really hate that plant.

It's trolltastic!

Seriously, though, just legalize it.  That way everyone will be peacefully sprawled on their couches, eating Fritos and watching Duck Dynasty.

2013-06-04 08:49:18 AM
now you understand why prohibitionists is so anti-decriminalization. It'd eliminate a method by which the cops can stop and frisk black folks who don't seem like they belong in that neighborhood.

2013-06-04 08:49:54 AM
This should be a calm and rational thread with no trolling whatsoever...

The article said arrested, so no, subby is not quoting the article.

If you are complaining about the headline then complain about the fact that there is an "s" missing not the fact that the NYTimes calls African Americans "Blacks".

2013-06-04 08:56:54 AM
Well, this could lead to a discussion into the socioeconomic implications of race, poverty, education, and the root causes of societal issues. Couple that with the concept that a disproportionate number of African American men are or have been incarcerated, and you start to paint a picture of hopelessness and dependency.

tl;dr: Nubians be smokin' reefer.

2013-06-04 08:58:39 AM
From the article:

"Black Americans were nearly four times ... blah, blah, blah ... "

The offending word was "blacks" ... the quoted word was "black(s)" ...

"It's pretty clear that law enforcement practices are not keeping pace with public opinion and state policies," said Mona Lynch, a professor of criminology, law and society at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

No shiat, the police actively lobby to keep is illegal, just the other month or two ago when Vermont was doing a decrim bill there were cops up there who drove up with cruisers on taxpayer money to lobby against it. People who believe the police "just enforce the law" are laughably naive.

I also have a relative who went through the police academy in MA recently and they taught them ways around the decrim bill to make arrests for small amounts of cannabis. paraphrased after someone mentions pot is decriminalized in MA: "they told some ways how to get around that, if you have a bunch of kids in the car and they each have some pot you split them up and ask them where they got it if they name one of the friends in the car we can arrest them for dealing"

Except it isn't the truth. Blacks are less likely to abuse, but more likely to get arrested for it. That's where the trolling comes into play.

I want to get serious for a minute. There is a huge discrepancy between the arrest rate for marijuana among blacks and non-blacks in this society. Blacks are 10 times more likely to be arrested and charged on a drug charge than a white person. This is wrong.

But it's not surprising. Blacks are a natural resource. They are the foundation of our modern society. Without them, we would be hard pressed to even call ourselves a society, much less have a culture to brag about.

On the whole, blacks should move to Colorado and Washington where their marijuana habits are not only legal but condoned and promoted.

Marijuana is something that shouldn't be treated criminally. Neither are our black brothers and sisters. They are citizens of our United States of America, and we need to treat them as such. No more hostility, no more accostility.

Preserve the black America. It's the only one we've got.

Let's just get this over with:

A. Not all black people are from Africa.
B. Not all African people are black.

Therefore, using "African Americans" as a racial descriptor is incorrect. Further, it's probably offensive to, say, Haitians and Egyptians.

/facts are racist

Seriously?  Preserve the black America?  Wow!!  Stop that shiat.

A. Get rid of/stop applying a dumb law which wastes TONS of money - WHOEVER is being targetted.
B. Stop assuming that Black folks are all smoking weed and that they should be treated differently or preserved like a fly in amber.

That includes the favoritism that SOME may currently enjoy to overcome decades of racism and disadvantage.  And we start that by establishing an off ramp - a scaling down ramp that is neither immediate nor based on subjective whims.  We progress as a nation when we ALL progress as a nation.

Small rant - one of the biggest problems we face as a nation of laws is that when we enact legislation to establish standards and overcome years of wrongdoing (whether it's treatment of our citizens, compensation for teachers, or polluted streams or whatever.....) we rarely establish objective standards to declare "Mission somewhat Accomplished" nor do we provide a means to gradually ramp down - we handle transition poorly.  Even a hospital will give you 30 seconds to recover after an operation before they kick you out on the street.  I want to see well-planned off ramps and a means to check against back-sliding into bad habits again.  I wish we did that as a nation better.

Here's the real problem.  There are cultural issues at play here that AverageAmericanGuy is pointing out.  Clearly, there's a problem.  It's that no one wants to discuss the elephant in the room.  What do you think can be done about it?

Years ago when I was serving on grand jury duty all the drug cases were kids of color that had been approached by an undercover officer to buy drugs, which they would go get on their behalf and then get arrested.  The whole practice seemed awful entrapmenty to me.

I mean when I was an unemployed kid I may have been tempted to do the same if somebody approached me out of nowhere with a business proposition.  But I lived in the mean streets of rural Iowa so I never really had that thrown at me.
