(KSL Salt Lake City)   Not news: townspeople are somewhat offended by an "immodest statue" on Main St. Still not news, but funny: the locals take to dressing it up to cover the naughty bits. Facepalm: the city now requires a permit to dress the statue   (ksl.com) divider line 130

neversubmit: Bloody William: If one of your main concerns is things being "immodest," you have the shiattiest priorities and standards in the world. Why does it always seem that human decency is inversely proportional to "moral" decency?

This!

On the flip side I'll bet there's some freaky shiat going on in that town.

limeyfellow: It reminds me of the people around here. They included a picture of Michelangelo's David in the paper and the locals hit the roof. One man wrote in saying "I don't know who this David is, but God would strike him down for such immodesty and sin." and another wrote in about how the paper should feel ashamed for showing their children gay pornography.

Yeah, I just think it's strange that his idea of good art is something that creates controversy, and I doubt that it was his intention in the first place. A good peice of art gets people talking, but it doesn't necessarily have to have people "for and against it." But whatever, it's a curvacious leaf lady, there shouldn't be a controversy anyway.

Because trolltastic headlines keeps the fark wheel spinning.

By saying permit, it leads you believe that you have to pay (LIKE A TAX!) to dress the statue, despite the article never once using that word. In fact, according to Coalville City's flyer advertisement, they pay you $25 to dress the statue and reimburse the cost of the clothing.

>Artist (Milt Neely) creates an abstract nude sculpture which is displayed on public street in Utah
>Some residents didn't like the abstract nudity on their streets, so they started dressing it up in various styles of clothing.
>Artist responds by saying: "Cool. They're talking about it. Let them dress it up"
>City now requires permit to dress up the artists work
>Residents - children and adults alike - begin applying for permits to dress it up
>Once loathed as a work of art, residents of all ages are now interacting with the art.
>The statue is now becoming a local tourist attraction of sorts.

This is the problem with hipster urban migration herds.

They flee the cities they ruined, aiming for the 'simple' life in the pretty places Out West. Then complain about there being no 'culture' in the outback. Then they get on to Boards and Town Councils and start spending tax dollars on ludicrous bull(cough) they imagine in their liberaltard addled pea-brains will beautify and make nice the farm and mining community which was doing just fine all by themselves. Like  Festivals! and  Art Shows! and stuff that has nothing to do with a hard rock mining town.

Until the libtard hipsters moved in. Like cockroaches. I hate libtard urban hipster herds.

Back in the 70's I was volunteering at the Stamford (CT) Museum and Nature Center. There had just been a big sculpture show at the Whitney and a number of well-known artists had been left out. The gallery director had the idea of a "Salon des Refuses" and a number of big name sculptors sent pieces.

One of these was Duane Hanson, who sent a hyperrealistic fiberglass self-portrait in the nude. Damn that thing looked real. We set it up in the main gallery and people almost immediately began to complain. The sculpture was moved several times, ultimately ended up in a back hall leading to the terrarium room, but people were still upset. Seems their lil darlins had to walk right past naked Duane on their way to view the turtles and frogs. I stopped by a few weeks later and the sculpture was still on display but had been fitted with a large strategically-placed maple leaf.

He's right. If there's no strong reaction to your art (one way or the other) then you may as well be painting sunsets for bank lobbies. Passionate viewer response is the different between art and decoration.

2.Charge uptights to dress said statue.
3. Profit

And the plan is working quite well.

I suspect what really really bugged people was the creepizoid factor. I was staying at a friend's house and she had a mannikin in her room. It startled me every time I walked in. A hyper-realistic naked man just standing there - staring into space would freak me right out. And normally Im a big fan of naked men.
