Bathia_Mapes: Congratulations!

Thank you, and thank you for the month of TotalFark.

I got flown out to New York and met Alan Alda.  He is a really nice guy.  I made him laugh a few times.  Achievement unlocked?

I got VIP treatment at the World Science Festival, and shared a car ride with Brian Greene's kids.  They're precocious.  The older one understands sarcasm, which is rare in an 8-year-old.

I'm still a tad giddy.

That's awesome. I'm gonna show my kids those videos.

I can well imagine you are. I adore Alan Alda and it's wonderful to know that he's a nice guy IRL.

I should thank all the Farkers who gave me encouragement and constructive feedback.  You guys were a lot nicer than you normally are.

In fact, the entire Internet has been a lot less dickish than I expected.  Now that I've gotten more exposure, the assholes should come out, but for now, you guys are all great.

Read the article.  I am seriously impressed.  Congrats!

FTA: "An American Chemical Society member-produced video that answers the question "What is time?"-so an 11-year-old can understand..."

If you really wanted a challenge, you should've tried to explain the concept of time(or anything else, really) so that it could be understood by a Canadian.

j/k

And I was going to come in here all Don Rickles-style for your winning something called a "Flame Challenge" and you go and be all nice and humble and now I'll look like a jackass if I act like a jackass.

Anyway, congratulations! That's a great achievement, and hopefully everyone will forget about that thing with you and those goats.

Nice video, loved the way you framed it. But "science is not scary"? Science is awe-inspiring but also pretty farking scary at the same time.

"Being chosen as a winner by 11-year-olds is a lot more meaningful to me in many ways than if the jury had been my scientific peers,"

I would like to buy you a beer, sir!

Part is of why science is so f*cking awesome is the scary aspect of it.

2013-06-03 10:22:35 PM
Bondith, do you get to keep the trophy permanently, or is it like the Stanley Cup where you get it for a year and then hand it over to next year's winner?

Make it a root beer and you're on (yeah, yeah, I don't drink, mock away).

It's got my name on it, so the next winner better be named the same way I am.  They're sculptures of the finest acrylic, so making new ones isn't a huge expense.

Actually, hang on...

That's me, Hawkeye and the written winner.  My parting comment to Alan was "From one ham to another, it was nice to meet you."  He walked off laughing.

The hardware.  Here's hoping United doesn't lose it.  I'm in LAX right now, waiting out a flight delay after a 5-hour layover.

"I'm a good judge of character, Bondith. And in my opinion you're in deficit. That is to say, I see nothing noteworthy... about your physiognomy or your general appearance. In summary, I don't like the cut of your jib. Good night to you, sir."

/Congrats

Good job!  You know kids, all right--I would have been the one jumping up to test the "occupying the same seat at the same time" idea.  So jealous that you got to meet Alan Alda!

Did you ask him to do any M*A*S*H quotes?

2013-06-04 01:08:03 AM
FTFA:
"I usually run the scripts past a friend for peer-review, but it's mostly me making them," Maguire adds. "I double check my facts to make sure I'm not saying anything wrong, write myself a script, and then stand in front of the camera and record until I get all the way through without flubbing a line."

Dude, if you are a scientist, then you really need to abandon the usage of "peer-review" in layman's terms...uh, ever, essentially. If you use the term in a scope broader than the 'term of art' usage of peer review, then you are in danger of appearing to have a Gary Null-like understanding of science. And that's not good for anyone.

It's been years since I've commented on Fark. This is the first time I've felt compelled to say something - well done! I think your timing is what nailed it. Reminds me of how the nerds talked in elementary school :D

Hey Bondith,

Shut down the video right when you were saying 'you can check out my videos on you..'

Where you gonna say youporn? You were gonna say youporn weren't you.

/Seriously though, congrats.
//Have some friends staying with me with twin 8 year olds. Might show this to them if the little buggers hold still long enough.
