"I'm prior-service military, getting out on medical retirement, highly trained with firearms," the 31-year-old says in a phone interview. "I've done range-safety courses and classes, and ran ranges, making sure everybody stays safe, and I applied the same training out there. I made sure all my rounds were pointed in a safe direction; I know which direction all my rounds were landing. I was shooting towards a rock face. I was between 150 to 200 meters away with a nine [millimeter] and a 12-gauge shotgun that had buckshot in it, so I wasn't hitting anything, and I wasn't doing any damage or anything like that, which I knew."

Yeah, fark that. If you're not shooting at a berm, it's lethal for miles as far as I'm concerned. I've run into so many of these dudes too. They're freaking military and I've forgotten more about gun safety then they've apparently ever known. They sure as hell were taught it, but I guess you can't fix dumb...

Chest.  The gun had jammed in such a way that the two were attempting to clear the weapon when it went off.

Rampart Range got shut down? I think maybe I remember reading about that.

Not sure how I feel about that. Unfortunate to lose shooting access on USFS land, but the few times I went there it was totally sketch.

I've left in the past because 2 army guys were pounding beers and tossing then in the air for their gfs to shoot at with pistols. It needed a range manager, too many dumb farks went up there. Mostly army that I saw doing dumb shiat for some reason. Not bagging on them but, when I saw more than one group wearing Affliction shirts I high tailed it out of there...

Yeah, definitely needed an RSO. I have a vague recollection that the straw that broke the camel's back for me was a guy walking downrange to change targets while I was shooting, without any inkling that maybe the correct thing to do was ask for a cease fire.

I ended up joining Frontier Sportsmen out east of town. Way safer.

I was up there once with a douchebag who was practicing turn and fire drills on the pistol range, and would draw and sweep everyone with his gun when he did so. I politely explained that it was unsafe, and he was clearly intent on harming others and as such I would shoot back if he did it again. Thankfully he stopped.

The other thing was all the random shiat that people would bring up there as targets, and the leave it there. I can understand milk jugs, soup cans, but I'm talking refrigerators and shiat. WTF?

Who was the group that used to sponsor range cleanup days there - was that CSSA?

Dunno, but I always thought it would be good community service punishment to pick up used shell casings rampart.

I always wondered: why was that thing so aggressive? I can see why the little razor-toothed aliens attacked them: they wanted to eat them, but I can't see a giant rock monster wanting to ingest a human.

I do wish they'd choose one area of a National Forest and stay there. They can enjoy their shooting and I can enjoy the forest sounds and not worry about a drunken or stupid idiot shooting me or my dog. No matter where I hike, it's blam, blam, blam. Then a really long pause and it starts up again. They'll also leave the detritus behind. Hey, folks, why come to a nice national forest and leave it looking like a dump? Why not just go to the dump and leave it like a dump. I was really pissed at someone who seemed to have shot up paint cans. That's farking toxic waste.
