A dead guy MIGHT have beaten Obama in the elections.

Maybe it's the GOP's new frontier. Trot out zombie Breitbart.

Christie has a golden opportunity to troll his idiot party here.

I wonder if there was any greater champion for protecting children from toxic chemicals that Senator Frank Lautenberg?

You're playing a little fast and loose with the definition of "enrage" when it comes to Democrats.  I don't think a single one is expecting Christie to appoint a Democrat to that seat, and most probably don't care all that much if he appoints a Teabagger or moderate.

Then again, most everyone in New Jersey should hope he picks a moderate Republican --that is, if any exist these days.  After all, as recent history shows, encouraging teabaggers is just something everyone will regret further down the line when they realize just how insane and utterly clueless about their responsibilities they really are.

Perhaps - but Christie relies on significant Democratic support in a heavily blue state.  Handing a seat that was overwhelmingly won by the Democrats (56% to 42% ) to a Republican is hardly going to play well with those voters.

The biggest question I have is if there's a Republican moderate enough that Christie could nominate him/her and NOT bring upon himself charges of right-wing extremism.

Maybe Christie will appoint the other Governor Christie?

I hope there is a special Hell just for people who think that misdemeanor convictions should result in the permanent, lifetime removal of constitutional rights.

I don't know if I'd rather this be deliberately crafted or an actual sincere in-the-wild example of superdense irony (the real kind, not the Morissette kind). But either way, +1.

No, it's a sincere wish.  And I say that as someone who isn't effected by the Domestic Violence Offender  Gun Ban (also known as the Lautenberg Amendment, because he was responsible for it).

If domestic violence is a serious enough problem that the people convicted of committing it should have their constitutional rights permanently removed, then the *PROPER* way to do that is to make it a felony.

Remember, we're talking about *MISDEMEANOR* charges here.  The sort of thing you might, for example, plea to because you'll pay a minor fine which is less than the cost of paying your lawyer for a trial.   Except now, you're farked if you ever touch a gun again, because you've just committed a felony.  Even if you plead guilty 30 or 40 years ago, prior to the enactment of the law, and have been a model citizen ever since.

And yes, it is a right guaranteed by the Constitution.  So if you can do it for one right, why not the others?

Criticizing people for wishing permanent over-the-top consequences on minor offenses is probably fair game. Doing so by yourself wishing eternal damnation on people who think this way...

I don't consider permanently taking away enumerated constitutional rights a "minor offense".
