I'll wager a paycheck that the Republicans will do everything that can to block a vote on the bill then blame the dems and Obama for it not passing.  Any takers?

Cinco de Mayo is the only holiday celebrated in the U.S. whose primary focus is freedom, not religion or patriotism.  Well, that and MLK day, but the point is that, of course right wingers hate it, they hate us for our freedom.

Nah, the bill will include the increased H1B pool that the repub backers have been calling for.  The repubs will sign off.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday in the US?
When it falls on a weekend do you also get Friday or Monday off?

Eh, the only reason why it's popular is due to electoral politics. It's probably the biggest pander in American history.

It's not so much a "holiday" as an "excuse to get hammered".

You think it's a non-US holiday?  I mean it gets a bit of play in Mexico, but it's pretty much entirely American in origin and celebration.  And no, you don't get it off, because right wingers hate us for a freedom.  Remember?

General Zaragoza would disagree with you (wiki):"The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces  at the "Battle of Puebla" under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza."

I have a feeling the house republicans will pass a bill that does everything the senate bill does, but load it up with so much additional unpalatable crap that it will be doomed in the senate.  They will derp it up with "why do the democrats hate hispanics?" on the sunday morning shows.  I'm just curious what the house will come up with.  It's sure to be entertaining, no matter what.

Yom ha'aztmaut was in April, but next year it will be on Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco is a big deal in the US, to fill a Spring Party void and Tequila drought, but it's Mexican roots are the Battle of Puebla which ran off the French but it's not the real independence day.

Juneteenth is an independence day celebrating the public reading of the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19. 1865 by the union general Gordon Granger in Galveston as he took Texas back into the union.

That was almost three years after the origin of the Proclamation. If it had been proclaimed in Texas on it's original day, September 22, we could have had the whole week off. From Diez y Ses, the real Mexican Independence day from Spain, to Juneteenth Sept 16-22.
Now STFU and GBTW.

Let's first give amnesty to Canadians, and see if they insist on using French in public schools.

So, just like St. Patrick's Day or Fat Tuesday? Those are the best holidays. I hate holidays like Christmas and Easter where you have to hang out with family but you have to nip the brandy on the sly to put up with them.

As for the bill, it is hardcore pandering. Every public school in Fairfax county (NoVa) already starts teaching Spanish in Kindergarten. A significant portion of the kids are ESL or no English anyway. The bill is weak on border security which is only going to put us offering amnesty again down the road. I'd be interested in what the Medicare and SS lifespans would be adjusted for the influx of high school educated 'citizens' if the bill was passed?

yeah and the Dems are giving away everything but the kitchen sink to get it passed too.
Not worth it imo.
The GOP want this done.
Also they will be able to use it against Dems. during campaigning (only a few of them in safe districts will reluctantly go along with it)

I know the history, I also know what the purported results of that history are.  I was being a bit facetious in the whole "hate us for our freedom" part(and the only part), but come on, man.  It really was about removing oppressive racist rulers.  Don't treat me like an ignorant cretin cause I was having a bit of fun.

//Even if I didn't know the history, I promise I would've read the wikipedia article before shooting off my mouth.

Uhmm, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the last time a European power tried to impose it's will over a North American country. After Cinco de Mayo, European influence on North America started to melt away. But DO try to keep up with history and facts, I know that cognitive dissonance and outright lies are a feature, not a bug for right wing shills such as yourself.
