(NBC News)   Now that Bachmann has removed herself from play and Palin's star has faded, the GOP is struggling with the question: How can it woo a new generation of women to its ranks? Assuming roofies are off the table, I mean. They're off the table, right?   (nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com) divider line 63

Republicans can try and persuade women to like GOP positions, or shift GOP stance to positions women like.

"Doggy style" probably won't cut it.

abb3w: Republicans can try and persuade women to like GOP positions, or shift GOP stance to positions women like.

Neither is likely.

2013-06-03 10:47:43 AM
Well, for one, you could put Phyllis Schlafly out to pasture once and for all.

2013-06-03 10:49:15 AM
In order to bring more women into the GOP, there will have to be an influx of closeted gay men who need a beard so they can attain high office.

2013-06-03 10:49:23 AM
Whatever happens I hope Sandra Fluke pops into the national conversation every now and then for the next few years. It's fun to watch the Republicans clumsily try to appeal to women, only to ruin it all by screaming what greedy sluts and whores they are for expecting birth control to be covered by insurance.

They should go with Orly Taitz. They need to double down to keep the base happy

I figure they'll just use Jesus magic like they have since old white guys hijacked some nice Jewish man's platitudes about being chill.

Wait, Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin attracted women voters?

Defunding Planned Parenthood and chipping away at reproductive rights are a sure-fire key to victory.

Maybe not be so god dang interested in what I'm doing or not doing with my reproductive organs?  Maybe that's an idea.

Well, having old rich white Southern guys stop talking about varying definitions of rape would be a start.

Conservative leaders, just like religious leaders, understand that their core constituency is the poorly educated.  An increasingly educated & sophisticated society is an increasingly non-religious one.  One of the biggest enablers of people to achieve a higher education is contraception.  In a very direct way, conservatives need the young & dumb to breed more, thus guaranteeing a supply of new followers.

The GOP is going to have to play the long game if they are seriously interested in getting women to join the party.  If they can get a repeal of all lead regulations this year, it's still going to be 2031 before they see the payoff.

The first meaningful step for the Republican party to show that they care about women and the things that affect their lives is for GOP politicians to walk up to the microphone and say: "STFU, Rush Limbaugh!  You are not helping anyone except for you trying to hold onto a shrinking radio audience.  Your opinions are not wanted or valued in our party.  Go away."

Until the GOP finds the courage to tell their chosen pundits that they are wrong, this will not happen.

Well, Sarah Palin exists in the national consciousness as more than just the headline "Alaska governor resigns due to ethics scandal" because the GOP honestly thought that Hillary Clinton voters would flock to her because she has tits.

There might have been a lot of Hillary voters who stayed home on election day, if they weren't all so pissed at the comparison.

calm like a bomb: The GOP is going to have to play the long game if they are seriously interested in getting women to join the party.

I loved their approach in 2012.

Democrats:Republicans are waging a war on women!
Women:(Does Google search, finds endless articles about Republicans cutting Planned Parenthood, slut shaming women on birth control, opposing equal pay laws, hailing rape babies as gifts from God) Hey wtf Republicans?
Republicans:There is no war on women. It's actually a Democrat War on conservative women. See? Look at how Bill Maher made fun of Sarah Palin. (dusts off hands) That ought to do it.

2013-06-03 11:26:02 AM
They'll find someone just as soon as Republicans realize that women DO, in fact, have valuable opinions of their own and are capable of making their own decisions...

...of course, they'll be Democrats then.

I dunno, really.  I'm a Gen Xer, and I had dinner with a group of peers (all of whom are good friends) this weekend.  All of the women excepting Mrs. Bomb spent a while talking about how awesome Nikki Hailey is, and how proud one woman was that her daughter was going to intern with Lindsey Graham.  Ignorant doesn't skip generations, I guess.

From Newt Gingrich.

They could probably start by deleting the word "rape" out of their vocabulary.  I think Republicans' willingness to talk about their feelings about rape have been the most destructive thing of all.  It shows their ignorance about the consequences, and it displays their underlying belief that women pretty much have it coming.

Not that I'm not grateful, mind you. I'd rather they be honest about their feelings that women can't be trusted to decide what's best for them and are the cause of all the evils in men's hearts. Makes things a LOT easier.

How can it woo a new generation of women to its ranks?

I'd start by pointing out that Bill Clinton is still a hero to many Democrats.

Don't those idiot women know that Clinton had an affair? Maybe you guys could try shouting it at them for a few more years. I'm sure once they finally understand they'll be tripping all over themselves to vote Republican.

Chaide: Wait, Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin attracted women voters?

They did have that potential. I remember in the debates before the 2008 election my mother (boomer) was originally really psyched about Palin, because for her it was a big deal to potentially have a female vice president. Then as the debates went on, and Palin talked more and more, that enthusiasm for Palin evaporated.

I think that having women run for important offices isn't going to attract the younger generation of women who have grow up with things like title IX protecting their equality. But for older women who grew up hearing the phrase "no, you can't do such-and-such because you're a girl" it's still exciting to see women achieve political power, and those women fall into the GOP target demographic anyway. If the GOP is smart about it, they can use that to their advantage.

You may have loads of crap to throw at these Republican women in government, but since there are more Republican female governors right now....

Jan Brewer, Governor, AZ
Susana Martinez, Governor, NM
Mary Fallin, Governor, OK
Nikki Haley, Governor, SC

6 Republican women are Lieutenant Governors
17 Republican women are Representatives in Congress
4 Republican women are Senators

I think that's a pretty good collection to choose from beyond Palin and Bachmann.

If only IF ONLY they had been able to tape those dollars to the topside of the seats without the students seeing them before they sat down.

Then she could have said "you need to spread your legs to find a buck."
