What's this "aging" business, submitter?

2013-06-03 12:35:27 AM
from what I got from it, he won't do any more CDs, but more digital stuff.  so he can get his parodies out faster and while the music is still fresh.  it's not like he's quitting music.

He still makes albums?

I'm okay with this. He's done well and if he continues to make fun digital stuff, all the better.

We're kind of at a really jokey period in pop music history (again) so how do you make fun of something that is already a joke? I guess he could do a spot on serious non-parody of that Macklemore song where he talks about child slave labor mining raw materials for cellphone and computer parts in the Congo or maybe just do crazy covers of old classics. Get ready for his version of "Kickstart(er) my heart" and "Smells Like Social Media"

TFA:  And surprisingly, Yankovic had his biggest single ever with 1996's "White & Nerdy" a parody of Chamillionaire's "Ridin'."

Who knew he'd parody a song 10 years before it came out?

This article is HORRIBLE. Along with all of the date and grammar mistakes above, they call his album and tour Apocalyse. It's Alpocalypse. Does anyone even edit this crap?

2013-06-03 09:33:39 AM
How sad.  I've been a life long fan of his, have most of his albums in my music rotation on my MP3 player in my car.

CSB: I knew that I was getting out of touch with pop music when on Weird Al's last two albums, I thought the did more original work, but only to find out that those were parodies of songs that I had never before heard.

2013-06-03 09:43:08 AM
Well Damn, that sucks. I've been a lifelong fan of his and will miss hearing his stuff

That being said, don't quit on me, Richard Cheese! I like my parody songs with F-bombs!

This. It's jarring to hear the originals of some of his parodies years after his version is embedded in my brain. He does enough original material that is can be hard to tell the difference at times.

As much as I love his stuff, this is probably a good idea.

2013-06-03 10:00:59 AM
He's not going away, just adapting.  Not a bad move.  Plus, I'm sure he's set for the rest of his life.  I hope he continues to tour.  Best live show ever.

It's a good way to honor his parents.

I like the idea of a "classics" album. Perhaps he could even bring in the original artists on an entire one-off album project, that could be interesting.

Not to mention it's well known that Nirvana knew that they "truly made it" after Weird Al made fun of them :)

Ultra-Bonus: The creator of American Pie (the song) has said that he actually has trouble NOT hearing the Weird Al Lyrics (The Saga Begins) even when he's playing, due to his kids enoyment of Al's version.

(At least, I remember hearing this somewhere)

Yep. He experimented with this a few years ago, when he released half of Alpocalypse as singles a couple years before the album.

For those who couldn't read TFA:

He's not retiring from music. He's just going to release singles after the last album on his contract.

Article is full of errors.  It's the Alpocalypse Tour, not the Apocalypse Tour.

The first concert I ever went to was a Weird Al concert. It was awesome. I'm glad he's planning on putting out new music instead of completely retiring. The world needs brilliant people like him to make fun of douchebags.

People who read TFA, perhaps.

I want an album full of Weird Al original songs covered by artists who have been covered by Weird Al.
I imagine a few of these folks would have the sense of humor to get involved in a project like that.

2013-06-03 11:27:04 AM
Are Al's concerts kid-friendly?  I was thinking of going to one but I didn't want to be exposed to a bunch of drunken potheads moshing around or potential foul language or sexual remarks.  Any insight?

I think his most underappreciated song is Good Old Days. (Acoustic version, live even)

I also like "Young, Dumb and Ugly".

Good Old Days is one of my favorites.  I personally liked "Frank's 2000" TV" better than "Young Dumb and Ugly", but "She Never Told Me She Was a Mime" is brilliant.

I heard that song performed by a vaudeville group here in KS.  I think we were the only ones in the audience that knew it.

Either they mis-spelled it at the start and corrected it at the end or you need to slow down your reading speed.

There have been several parodies of 'Thrift Store' and 'Gangnam Style' and not a single accordion was injured.

Sounds like he'll still be making music and it'll be easier to pirate.  Win/win.
