And so, has the world become completely pussified. Seeing an entirely ungraphic shot of part of nature doing its species' version of what is the most natural thing in the world -- the very thing that was done to create every single living thing on the planet -- or at least believing itself to be so doing... That is now so graphic we need a disclaimer to fend off the complaints from closeted nutjobs.

Fark, I hate this world sometimes.

Well, moose have very poor eyesight, or maybe the smell of one moose getting it done on the statue is enough to bring in the other moose.

Or maybe the moose in Grand Lake are just more open-minded.

Moose are perverts.  They'll fark anything and turn around and grin at you while you were doing it.  Big shiat eating grin "Ahma farking this here stat-choo and yer gonna watch".  One spent a few days wooing my husband's truck until the husband had enough and deployed frozen paint balls.

I have trouble with the idea of a moose going up to something that does not smell like another moose and trying to do the old nasty with it.  I bet that someone sprayed the statue with pheromones.

I read about an experiment a looong time ago and am having difficulty finding it.

A male turkey was introduced to basically a stick in the ground with a crude facsimile of a female turkey on top.

The turkey would mount and try to mate with it.

When you get down to it, what is really the difference in that and someone looking at a picture of a naked woman and musturbating?

Gyrfalcon: Moose aren't too bright, are they?

No. Moose are dumber'n dogshiat. They're big as a horse (bigger sometimes) and mean, and they know it. But thats the only real evolutionary advantage they have. I've come across them on the highway up in northeastern B.C. and they'll just stand there in the middle of the road. You can drive right up to them and nudge them with the truck, and they'll just look at you the same way they probably look at a tree. You can also walk right up to them and shoot them from 20 feet away and they won't even react to your presence until the slug goes through them.

But you DO NOT mess with them during the rut. They'll kill you deader'n hell. As I am typing this in, I am doing a GIS for a particular picture I saw once, of two skeletons, taken somewhere up in the Yukon. One skeleton was of a huge moose, the other was human, still holding his rifle and wearing his boots and red flannel shirt. It's one of those pictures that reminds one of how small and easily broken humans are.

Yeah, doesn't seem too surprising.  For any species that doesn't require expensive courtship rituals, it doesn't make any sense for the male to devote brainpower to being selective with mating.  The evolutionary pressure to spread your genes as much as possible is strong, and there's very little downside for the male.

I bet that males in species that have to put forth effort to woo a female are a lot pickier.

That could be it, although in my recollection, the picture was much more recent than that. Saw it on a poster in the office of one of my old metal suppliers years ago.

I'm an avid spring turkey hunter that uses decoys. I've seen many a tom attack my jake decoy. They will come charging in and attack it because they think it's wooing the hen decoys
