Germany doesn't have the Dortmund or Bayern players, so it's not the same German force we're used to, but I still think they'll pull of a victory here.  Germany 3-1

I'll pick Brazil 2-1 over England.

It's enough of a force to give the US a good sparring partner before the Hexagonal resumes. That's what really matters.

Wonder if the US remembered their lube today?

If not, this is going to be painful.

Even without those players, Germany is still really, really good. I think they take this game with ease, although the US is making rapid improvement.

Interesting from Klinsi to play Fab as an attacking wing.

Well, it's true as long as soccer keeps getting more popular and the American talent pool keeps expanding. We're just at the point where the teams we're alongside are better, returns are diminishing and we need to improve more and more to make each successive step. 20 years ago we were a laughingstock that it was a humiliation to lose to. To say the least, we are not in that position anymore.

yeah, i know.  and i said that as someone that played soccer my whole damn childhood, meaning age 5 to 18.  i still kick the ball around a little bit.  love the game, but wish we were better.

yup, heard that today.  the 100 year anniversary of american soccer.

one hundred freaking years?  amazing.

At least we're at the point where it's just specific things we need to work on and it's not just 'the whole damn thing sucks, blow it up and start all over'. Goalies, for example. We have more world-class goalies than we know what to do with, been that way since the days of Tony Meola. Guys like Zack Thornton could start for someone else but barely cap here. We just need help at the other end. We need guys that can score.

2013-06-02 02:50:59 PM
Wow, that is one of the worst open goal misses I've ever seen.

It's nice to see US players being picked up in international leagues now, but I don't know that we'll ever take the final step until there's a more concerted effort to build America's youth system with more and better youth development academies. AYSO alone won't cut it.

That was nice timing and setup by everyone involved.

good point.

Also, dammit.

Goalzy by Altidore was beautiful.

2013-06-02 02:55:17 PM
That looked like a backyard practice volley. That didn't even look like it came under pressure of a national-team match. Just 'hey, hold my beer and turn the camera on, watch this'.

2013-06-02 02:56:10 PM
Bender just watching how Altidore scores is why you swap an injured defender with someone up front until the substitution is made.

2013-06-02 02:56:23 PM
OH MY GOD WTF JUST HAPPENED

2013-06-02 02:56:25 PM

US looking good in the first 15 minutes. Still think Germany will turn on the gas at some point.

WHAT WAS TER-STEGEN DOING?!?!?!

2013-06-02 02:56:51 PM
OK, Germany seems to a bit off-balance

2013-06-02 02:56:52 PM
Duh, those DFB guys need holidays...

he just let it roll past him.  thats god damn crazy.

2013-06-02 02:57:35 PM
WTF Germany, is your team off the bus yet?

2013-06-02 02:58:32 PM
Oh dear. Ter Stegen and the national team.
The last time he played behind such a mess of a team, Germany conceded 5 goals against Switzerland; looks like he and Germany are going for the repeat performance.

2013-06-02 02:59:00 PM
There must be a gravity difference or something in the US.

None of these guys have played in at least a week, if not more. Legs is not an excuse here, I think they aren't dealing with the heat well, they seem really slow on their feet.

Another miss in the same spot.

Well, not quite 'let it'. It was a back pass, a stopping foot that just nicked the ball and then OH SIT STARRING JAMIE KENNEDY GET BACK HERE BALL NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Uh, half of them played another exhibition game against Ecuador in Florida last week and Bender and Klose were only flown in this week.

If this doesn't pick up I may switch to see the Brazil match :S

Right you are, forgot about the Ecuador game. Still, as you say, half the team is fresh, so legs isn't that much of an issue.

Last night Chivas USA had a pretty heinous one against the Sounders.

I don't know.

Well, actually, that would have been quite a pretty goal had it been at the correct end. Besides, Chivas isn't a real soccer team anyway.
