Yeah, bought a set for $200 about 15 years ago, and still using them. The problem is, I only get out about once a year, if that.

Some of mine are are 30+ years old.  I get out a couple times a year at best.  For me a good drive is 175 yards.  It's straight but not far.  Who cares?  It's fun and my youngest likes to play too.

If 75k means anything to you, then you don't have time to play golf AT ALL, and should instead be looking for another job or investing in re-training.

A buddy of mine still uses the same "Big Bertha" driver from late 90s/ early 2000s. He hits that thing 330 consistently.

You'd be much better off getting some cheap clubs custom fit to your size, and practicing like crazy.

csb: used to play disc golf at a certain course that had a 10 ft tree pretty much drowning the basket in leaves. people always biatched about it and complained to the park about it who said too bad. one morning I got there and there was fresh marks in the grass where someone chained it to their truck and ripped it out. all that was left was a 1 ft stub coming out of the ground.

Paid $120.00 for used clubs and bag after going out and shooting not too bad, unfortunately I never got better and after couple years gave them away. Even though I knew I was crappy I would still get pissed off when I shot lousy and I was losing a shiatload of balls, the more I played the worse I got. I will stick with darts, closer to the beer.

But with Golf being a yuppie thing, I would expect golf stuff with even more ridiculous prices to be availlable.

Didn't Tiger Woods start losing golf matches because he was using older clubs that couldn't compete with newer ones?

So by logic, regardless of how expensive these $75k clubs are, they will become obsolete just like any clubs when newer ones are made with better metal alloys or wind resistance or what the fark ever makes new golf clubs better?

/doesn't play golf

My father has played for thirty five years+. I took it up last year to spend some time on the course with him once a week.

It is nice and quiet but you're not going to be "unstressed" out there unless you're not driven to succeed. You have to have a short memory which ultimately will improve your game and let you leave the course having enjoyed it even if you played terribly.

Your choice:

A - Golf, a good walk ruined.

B - A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.

I've heard it said that the best way to improve your golf game is to buy a new set of club. The reason: After buying them you will hit the range and local Par-3 every chance you get to "break them in." It's all about finding an excuse to practice between the rounds you have money/drinks riding on.

I'll stick with my latest set of Ping Ansers. Digging the KBS C-taper shafts.

Yeah... I'm an idiot and get new clubs every season.

That's pretty much it. I'm terrible and just hope to break 100 some day. My neighbors are all way better than me, and we go out on the course often, at least once a month. They are good guys and extremely patient, have even given me a pointer or two. But man, nothing beats toodling around the course with a cold one on a beautiful day, three-putts be damned.

Take it up, you can find a decent set of clubs for a few hundred bucks at most. Find some friends you can go with, and just start hacking.

I've talked to a few friends about it.  They are willing to let me tag along as long as I go to the driving range enough to get a long shot down.

Hell yeah, even better if you can just go to the range, borrow some clubs and see if you have a feel for it before you plunk any money down. And I've found the long shot to be the hardest. I've played a lot of par 3s with my friends and have gotten my mid-range and short game down several notches below "embarassing" but it's a consistent drive that's the toughest. It doesn't help that the only lit driving range within 25 miles of my house just shut down. Keep an eye out on groupon for lessons, too. I just got a free lesson and computerized swing analysis deal for $49 bucks, a $200 value.

I have the opposite problem..  I can put my tee shots on the fairway pretty consistently, but I don't have the control to get near enough to the pin to birdie consistently.  I still pretty much just aim for the fat part of the green and not the pin.  Oh, and lessons make a world of difference.  I spent years being stubborn about it, trying to teach myself to swing from a Jack Nicklaus book, but a few lessons from a good teaching pro was what ultimately made all the difference.
