I don't know why The Walking Dead and Falling Skies heve to shut down cities for shoots. They could film survivors walking through a ghost town at 2 PM on a Tuesday in Detroit.

Sometimes I'm not even sure if arson is illegal here. It's sort of just a regular bonfire in these parts...just with crackheads.

So that's nice.

Oh. I hear they're selling all the art to pay off out suffocating debt and smutty politicians. Never mind.

But...the Detroit Riverfront! Oh...there's massive hills of petroleum coke on it? Hm.

Alright then. Carry on.

That is, and folks, we aren't keen on admitting it because it would make us review the whole "America, it can't happen here"™ dictum, but, I digress - a failed city.

It is a failed municipality.

the paint is being scraped off the walls, the culture is being auctioned off, the metals are being scrapped, the wood is being burned, the money has left, the animals can't survive unless they're feral, the only growth industry is crime and dope.  It's done.  It grew, arced, peaked and when it's monothematic economy got dismantled, it fell over.

And it's going to continue to rot and stink until it is evacuated, it's charter revoked, the carrion feeding off of it's political remains are shooed away and then tilled, fenced off and returned to seasonal subsistence farming.  It's a ghost town.  And all that snazzy architecture and industrial doo daddery and spiffy roads and plumbing and streetlights didn't  keep it from becoming a tintype mining down gone bust.  Motown, the city, is no more.  Go put a coat of wax on your '69 Chevelle, put on some Marvin Gaye records and groove to the nostalgia, but it's over.  Over.  Let it pass some dignities of the memories it held.

The same can be said of New Orleans and parts of Oklahoma. And Washington DC, come to think about it. Next, it will be the San Andreas physically wrecking California even worse than the politicians have wrecked it economically.

When we let the Job Creators™ whored out industry wholesale to whatever 30¢ an hour jerkwater that would let them fulfill the Prophesy of Dereaganulation, that insisted that "greed is good", our fearless failed B actor leader waxed avuncular whilst the needle dicked pansies in the little gray German cars tore the ass out of the economy and moved it to China and Mexico and India.

Does anybody *really* still believe that you can have an economy based on lawyers, marketing wankers, 2,000.00 an hour doctors and bartenders, baristas, checkout clerks and bodegas?

If you don't actually make things, you don't create wealth.  You can say what you like about lowlife dope dealers but at least they're smart enough to know you have to have an actual product.  The America we're constantly reminded that we must believe in, and work harder to replace the stolen wealth for, made cars.  We made machines, furniture, electronics and actually put money into R&D.  That America is sitting at the kitchen table with a stack of unpaid bills that daddy left when he moved in with his whore, sipping a 2.99 lattè and drumming it's fingers.

Anybody feeling the morning in America?  Anybody open a new business with some trickle down?  Anybody feel like walking to the corner at 3:00 in the morning, down what was once a safe street, without a gun?  If America was a mom and pop store, it would be boarded up and they'd be auctioning the dairy coolers off on the lawn.  We can start firing people or wait for Detroit to be installed everywhere.  .02 USD.

Blame?  Blame you for what?  you opinion?  Trying to pin the wholesale gutting on an entire town's economy on people who want to earn a living wage, because there were a few greedy idiots at the helm of their unions, sort of looks conveniently past the boards of the corporations who made the products demanding to take home pig in sh*t amounts of  money for sitting on their ass and complaining about unions.

I know from experience that those people are paid, and coached, to be ridiculously over the top doucheknuckles.

That's not to say people in Detroit are all about hugs and positive feelings, but if you base your opinion on people on that show, you're misinformed.

You're probably right. But why would anyone participate in this charade? It's a disgrace to their community and culture. I don't understand but I'm kinda sheltered here in western Kansas. Ever watch Hardcorn Pawn? See how the local "natives" behave?

Disgrace is the new badge of honor.  The baddest badass, the most ugly ass gold jewelry, the most ridiculously accessorized car, the loudest mouth, the least language skills, the toughest tough guy with the horniest b*tchiz.  You want to see somebody disgrace themselves on TeeVee by today's "cultural standards"? Have him go in front of a camera and admit he drives a Ford Taurus, has an associates degree and mows his lawn.

That would actually be an interesting 'response' experiment.  Round up a bunch of successful folks who didn't go to college, and some that didn't graduate High School, have them give taped 'confessions', air those 'confessions', have people comment on what type of person they think the individual is - then reveal the success those 'uneducated' folks have had.

It's very simple.  Any time something happens that is either ostensibly a good thing, but it seems shady or a very obviously not good thing, step back a few feet from the detail you're focusing on and see it within the context of the whole canvas.  Then trace the money supply and you pretty much have the facts.  .02 USD.

What happened to Detroit?

It's like the house that Jack   built  demolished.
There was a drawdown and job loss after World War II.
And the growth of suburbs.
Which businesses followed.
Which eroded the tax base.
Which hurt schools.
And which led to killing off public transportation.
Which led to aggressive "urban renewal" in the 50s.
Which led to tax increases.
Which accelerated white flight to the suburbs and better schools.
Which businesses followed.
Which led to more "urban renew" in the 70s.
Which led to unsustainable tax increases.
Which led to yet another ring of suburbs.
Which led to more flight toward better schools and jobs.
And the city is still rotting from the core out.

The oil shocks of the seventies, the inflexibility and greed of automobile executives, offshoring of factories, and the tax incentive bidding wars among cities and states that hammered in the stake don't count.

/Because Unions!
