Americanization strikes again

We were the first to convince Russians to smoke tobacco and we are the first for doing smoking bans.

I recall there was alcohol prohibition enacted in Russia in late 1914...

More like 120%.  Kids in utero, dead people too.  The whole country smells like an ashtray.

Alcohol prohibition would be more funner to watch.

I remember walking through the halls of the Gornii Institute in St. Petersburg wondering how the fog from the Neva got into the building...and then realized it was cigarette smoke.

Good luck with that, Russia.

"There were those of us who fought against it, but in the end we could not keep up with the expense involved in the anti-smoking campaign  the anti-alcohol campaign, and the anti-obesity campaign. At the same time our people grumbled for more smartphones and reality shows. Our marketing scheme cost us just a small fraction of what we had been spending on health care costs in a single year. The deciding factor was when we learned that your country was working along similar lines, and we were afraid of a smoking gap."

FTFA: "Cigarettes are much cheaper in Russia than in the U.S. and Europe, with the price of a pack starting at about $1."

I gotta ask...what does a dollar pack of Russian cigarettes cost?  Also, how much of it is actually Tobacco and not filler crap?

I will be watching this closely because you can get a pack of cheap cigs there for less than the price of a chocolate bar.

I don't smoke so I might not understand; but why hasn't everyone moved on to electronic cigs?

You get the same drug, delivered more effectively....minus most of the bad things everyone complains about.  No fires, no smoke, no smell.  Seems perfect to me.

It was to be announced at the Party Congress on Monday. As you know, the Premier loves surprises.

Cigarettes have dozens of drugs in them, MAOIs etc that make the nicotine more enjoyable and addictive. E-cigs do not.

You do realize cigarettes cost practically nothing to make, right?  You should see how cheap they are in Africa.

If you think companies who make liquid nicotine cartridges arent willing to load it up with chemicals to keep you addicting and buying, you are very naive.

The current ban guidelines look just like ours. I'm interested to see how far they take it.

Personally I like waking up after a night at a bar and not smelling like smoke, but I understand the outrage.

The first country I encountered this in was Ireland, Dublin specifically.  Even though a high percentage of the population smoked, they enacted the ban.  It wasn't bad at all; it was November, so the bar had set up some heaters outside so it wasn't unpleasant.  And, like you said, it was nice to breath fresh air in the bar (and I ended up smoking a lot less).

I think what struck me is how nobody really had an attitude about it.  By this, I'm not just referring to the smokers, but the non-smokers as well.  Here the attitude seems to be, "GO STAND OUT IN THE STREET WITH THE JUNKIES AND THE WHORES WHERE YOU BELONG, SMOKER!!!!".  It's amazing to me how the attitude towards smoking has changed so much in the last 20-30 years, but give people the opportunity to be self-righteous pricks about something, and they'll never fail to impress.

Honestly, I have no idea what a pack of cigs costs.  I know the production process is highly mechanized...and I even know a certain percentage of cigs are tobacco water sprayed onto super thin paper...which reduces material costs...

But yeah...I have no idea what what a pack of Camels costs to make...

It's pretty basic economics.

Russia's birth rate is far below the replacement level, and unlike the West, they have virtually no immigration to make up the gap.  They have to find ways of keeping workers healthy longer.

They have state run healthcare.  When the government pays your medical bills, they will inevitably start dictating what you eat, drink, smoke, etc.

Nick Nostril: Alcohol prohibition would be more funner to watch.

They tried that already. It led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Why do you think Yeltsin, even with his obvious semi-functional alcoholism, was so popular?

/Yes, really.

No Russia that isn't how you do it.  You tax them until they are out of reach of most people and that creates a large tax income at the same time.  Win/win.

Ahh - fair enough.  I thought it was just about the nicotine.  Still, it seems like you'd be able to just add whatever other drugs actually make it more enjoyable and avoid a lot of the negative stuff.

I make my own nicotine juice for e-cigs. You buy pure nicotine in a propylene glycol solution and add a bit of flavoring to it. Not as safe as not smoking, but a hell of alot safer than tobacco.

If you take what the typical Russian smoker earns into consideration then they are probably not cheaper.

What is this 40%? It seemed damn close to 100% to me, subby.

Meh, I guess that was a while ago. But seeing 8-year-olds smoking *in* the schools and giving teachers the (figurative, it's a different culture with different norms) finger kinda skews your perspective.

This!

Back in the beginning 2009 before the federal cigarette taxes were raised, I was paying just under $50 a carton.  They announced the tax increase and even BEFORE it took effect, prices shot up to $70 a carton.  And that was way more than the tax actually increased the prices.

So, f**k you RJR and f**k you Phillip Morris.  I quit!

Smart move, tovarich. Then again, Russia has a history of doing the worst thing possible at the worst time possible. At the start of WW1, the Czar was worried about alchohol consumption in the Russian army. So he enacted a national ban on Vodka sales. Immediately, 1/3rd of the government revenue slides down the tubes. Just what you need in a war.
