That is weird. Normally it's the ones in Yankees caps doing the beating.

At first I thought this was going to be about the beating the Tigers put on the Orioles today. That 4th inning was just ugly.

If someone throws beer on you, don't walk up to attack them, call an Usher.

Also subby, he wasn't beaten half to death, he was hit knocked over a railing.

Then one of the men threw a beer that hit the couple, according to police, and when Fortese approached the men and began arguing with them, one punched him in the head.
The blow sent Fortese over a railing and onto the concrete about five feet below.

I wonder why I don't go to major league games. Sky high prices and drunken violent fans. What's not to like.

Meanwhile the local dirt-league stadium is full of families, I see no drunks at all, and everybody has fun. I walk out feeling better about humanity.

The only thing that surprises me was that this happened in Baltimore rather than Boston.

Seeing Yankees caps at Orioles games where the Yankess aren't playing isn't uncommon.  Generally you only have to worry about the drunks heckling you, but, as I mentioned before, when they threw the beer, he should have called an Usher.  Trying to "man up" in front of his date and argue with two drunks was not the brightest move.

Here there are drunks at minor league games as well, but they're the fun drunks who aren't too obnoxious.

Then again, it IS Wisconsin, so it'd be a miracle if there WEREN'T any drunks at a minor league game

Why do people take a kid's game so seriously?

How could they possibly know that?  Did they beat him again exactly the same way, and he died at the end?

So basically, we need to ban baseball to end this baseball fan violence. Perhaps replace it with a more entertaining game like lawn bowls.

Things were much more civilized when people wore suits and ties to the ballpark. Let's go back to those days!

Prohibition was a bigger factor of no drunken altercations.  Not the suits and Fedoras.

In those days it was Ty Cobb beating men half to death.

/And one of them was already half a man, that split him into some kind of fraction I can't even measure

Totally sucks for this young man, but as d-a already pointed out, he likely mad a bad situation worse by trying to resolve it himself instead of calling for stadium staff.  And while the author of the article wasn't able to get comments from the accused assailants, it certainly sounds like neither intended to inflict serious injury on the victim...just an ill-timed punch thrown by a drunk that happened to knock a guy over a railing.

FWIW, I've been to dozens of Orioles games over the years & have never seen so much as a fight in the stands, neither in Camden Yards nor in old Memorial Stadium.  I did play the out-of-town fan at an Orioles game in Atlanta once, and aside from some good-natured mutual heckling with a couple guys seated in the row in front of us had no issue there, either (Orioles hat AND shirt for that one).

Anyway, likely outcome is that the guy who threw the punch gets convicted & maybe serves a short-term sentence, his buddy gets probation & mandatory alcohol counseling, and both men + the stadium & team get sued.

degenerate-afro: Prohibition was a bigger factor of no drunken altercations. Not the suits and Fedoras.

The far bigger factor lay in the fact that the owners hadn't realized yet how much money they could make by selling official team merchandise.

There's an old saying that if you don't speak up, you won't be heard. As a firm believer in the veracity of that saying, I feel obligated to speak up on the subject of Yankees Fan's jackbooted insults. What follows is a set of observations I have made about flagitious, two-faced nabobs of presentism. The only thing bigger than the chip on Yankees Fan's shoulder is the grossness of his theatrics. Or, to express that sentiment without all of the emotionally charged lingo, if we're not careful, Yankees Fan's postmodernist press releases will throw us into a third world war within a short period of time.
Many, many people have been hurt by Yankees Fan for daring to tell it like it is. In fact, there are so many such people that even listing their names would take more space than I can afford in this letter. In their honor, though, I will say that I have often maintained that reasonable people can reasonably disagree. Unfortunately, when dealing with Yankees Fan and his forces, that claim assumes facts not in evidence. So let me claim instead that Yankees Fan's plan is to sacrifice children on the twin altars of etatism and greed. Yankees Fan's co-conspirators are moving at a frightening pace toward the total implementation of that agenda, which includes trampling into the mud all that is fine and noble and beautiful. As a final reminder, please don't let Yankees Fan's prevarications dissuade you from balkanizing his contemptible coterie into an etiolated and sapless agglomeration. Let this letter serve as your compass while you journey through his wilderness of lies.

Fighting over sports teams has got to be one of if not the stupidest thing in the world.  Hades, it is actually dumber than fighting over religion and politics.

I was actually at Yankee Stadium for a Yankees/Mariners game and some douchebag was walking around with a White Sox jersey that had the name "Cubs Suck" on the back, and he was actually going up to people and saying, "CUBS SUCK!"  I do not know what was more pathetic, his attire and actions or that his friends were constantly high-fiving him every time he said it.  I love sports, but I hate a lot of sports fans.  So many of them truly are the scum of the earth.
