I don't really read any of these nutritional labels, but I've always been surprised that alcoholic beverages are apparently exempt from them.  How did that happen?  Genuinely curious.

This should have happened years ago. Consumers should have the right to know of their spirits have any added ingredients besides the distilled spirits.

While were on it, all beers should be required to list the ABV on the bottle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Guinness WANT to include nutritional information some time in the past, only to be told they weren't allowed?

Something about being able to support the whole "Guinness is good for you!" campaign.

Alcohol taxes run about 80% of retail product cost, so the government does not want to do anything to upset its revenue stream.

If laws and taxes were proportional to damage done, marijuana would be legal, alcohol would be punishable by prison and tobacco would carry the death penalty.

Alcohol is not regulated by the Pure Food & Drug Act, but by the enabling legislation for the ATF instead.

As a functional fatass, I too wish to know the nuterial value of the drink I'm buying/drinking. But what I'm more curious of is the ingredients.  There are just so many biatch beers, wine coolers, ciders, energy drinks, and new-fangled spirits, that is hard to know what exactly one is consuming (not that there aren't enough loopholes in current labeling laws that make it hard to know exactly what one is eating, but hey its a start)

That's what I was thinking. I'm a friggin' twig and I consume way more beer and occasional cocktails/spirits than I "should." Being fat is what makes you fat, try burning some calories. Newsflash: It works.

Vodka seems to be about 72cals an oz (most shots are an oz and a half). But your right about alcohol, 95%Everclear is 190cals an oz.

I work in the industry and I can assure you that taxes are NOT 80% of the retail price in US.  Not even close.

Alcohol doesn't metabolize like a sugar.  Alcohol never turns into glucose.  However, the body prioritizes the metabolization of alcohol over anything else you've eaten or drank, and alcohol and lower blood sugar levels.  If you eat a lot of food while drinking the body puts off metabolizing that food until it has the alcohol under control, then starts focusing on the food, and if it suddenly starts looking at the food while you have low blood sugar, it increases insulin production and whammo you suddenly have a ton of glucose in your system that's being turned into fat.

The alcohol itself doesn't make you fat, but eating while drinking can make you fatter than eating while not drinking.

Subby, you are a lying liar lying out of your lie-hole.

Crap. Alright, maybe you have a point.

Sometimes the hangover is the most enjoyable part of the next day.

But next time I decide I can multitask by singing Closer, dancing, and drinking... Well, it's better than a scrapbook. Kind of. Maybe.

Cheers?!

I wasn't thinking about it on that level as much as just knowing what you're getting into.  If a beer is 3%-5% I can have a few without ending up on my ass, if it's 10%-15%, that changes a lot.

IIRC when Bert Grant back in the '80s started a micro-brewery he put the nutrional info on the labels at first but there's some Fed. law that you can't promote any alcoholic beverage as being good for you, which apparently they thought he was doing.

/This won't happen now since Bud/Miller/Coors will never let you know what goes into their swill.

This isn't true, alcohol eventually breaks down into Acetyl-CoA. Then it's free to enter the Krebs cycle or be transformed into a fatty acid and stored as a triglyceride (fat). Alcohol calories are just like any other calorie, having an excess will cause weight gain, when you ingest the calories is irrelevant.
