All in all a reasonable list. I was pleased with the top two.

Pretty good, but a glaring omission...

Pleased with the District 9 inclusion near the top. That's when that movie went from good to bad-f*cking-ass.

The lightsaber is awesome and all but really, there's no use for a ranged weapon? Like a Jedi couldn't have a blaster at his side in case there was an enemy he didn't want to run up to and slice?

It's an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster.

Agreed. I always find it funny that the first thing I thought when I saw that gun was "what does the little red button do?"

What about the tracking gun and smart bullets from Runnaway

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088024/

And the Phaser is the hands down winner. Lighsaber is cool but the phaser cuts, dices, cooks, stuns, kills and cleans. Body in the way, no problem, kick it up to 16 and evaporate the corpse.

Sadly, JJ Abrams is completely removing light sabers from the new Star Wars sequel. Jedi will instead fight entirely with lens flares.

While other posters have covered excellent examples of glaring omissions, here are more:

foreverdyingbrightly.com Almost a character, not a simple plot device.

encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com Steampunk without being pretentious.

flapship.com For raw power up close.

I can never look at the concept of tracking bullets without the cartoon revolver from Who Framed Roger Rabbit popping into my head.

Pretty sure she did not appear in serenity and is therefore was ineligible for this list.

Amazingly, the dialogue will also get worse than Ep1-3.  When a Jedi meets a Sith, he will say "either I'm goin down, or you are!"

I was just typing that! They put it in goldenye or perfect dark on the N64 and it was the most fun playing all rail guns!

When I was a kid the scenes with various people getting disentegrated slowly with a phaser blast in Wrath of Khan freaked me out a bit. Up until then I had only seen the tame phaser effects from reruns of TOS.

To be fair the woman getting turned into a cyborg in superman 3 also freaked me out.

I don't care if force unleashed got panned. Force throwing your enemies is quite entertaining.

The pulse rifle is just a conventional rifle with a grenade launcher under it. cool but not 'sci-fi'. The winner from that franchise is the Smartgun. Its also the gotta have weapon for any game its in.

Subtle_Canary: The pulse rifle is just a conventional rifle with a grenade launcher under it. cool but not 'sci-fi'.

Like many of the firearms on this list, it's a combination of real-world weapons. To wit:  The pulse rifle was constructed from an submachine gun fitted with a cutdown shotgun underneath with the heat shield and foregrip of a covering it.

That was pretty slick, as were the clocked long range, warp capable guided missles Edeington supposidly had.

When I first saw that, I was reminded of an old 80s Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cartoon, where the Kingpin was trying to steal something called an Omni Blaster. It could shoot bullets, heat rays, cold rays, stun rays, I think even some sort of energy net. Pretty spiffy tech for early 80s, but it was like having a team of superheroes in your hands.

Mugato: The lightsaber is awesome and all but really, there's no use for a ranged weapon? Like a Jedi couldn't have a blaster at his side in case there was an enemy he didn't want to run up to and slice?

I always thought Luke had the best set up when he showed up at Cloud City with a blaster on one hip and a light sabre on the others.

As more of a Star Trek fan, I would lean toward the uber functional phaser. As others have pointed out, you can do so much with one and the reboot phasters really just strike me as blasters. I found it impressive when they could litterally fill an entire room with a stun shot, that'd make room almost easy.
That said, the light sabre is a brillant idea. And it's so open ended in terms of its abilities. What could you cut with it? Captain America's shield? Superman? Woverinne? Starfleet shelding? What could you deflect with one? Laser bolts? Photon torpedos?

All and all, the Genesis Device might be the single most powerful "weapon" in all of Star Trek, aside from the red matter of the reboot. Imagine fitting a Genesis into one of those cloacked missles or beaming it onto a unsuspecting planet. Boom. Done. Send one through an Iconian Gate and you'd be unstoppable. Then fit your personal quarters with Mirror Kirk's Dissapearing Button and a hot Captain's Woman.

Am I imagining things, or was there a weapon that was basically shooting miniature black holes at people/things?  Once it penetrated, it basically sucked up everything that object consisted of.
