Reading the trolltastic comments on Al Jazeera articles is a window into a whole different world.  It's the only place where I've seen people trolling infidels, but I don't look around much.

Which is why we need stop sabre rattling at Iran. The population is very young. They all have internet/satellite dishes and they attend Friday prayers at a lower rate than Scandinavians attend church on Sunday. Let it work itself out naturally.

Right after 9/11 (within a few days), some site had an op-ed that basically said "parachute in laptops and give everyone in the Middle East an Internet connection.  Give them access to all of western culture - movies, music, books, start translating our works into Arabic, etc."

Oh but didn't you hear? The US has announced Iran's increasing its sponsorship of terrorism. It might have something to do with Israel and the US destabilizing Iran's oil infrastructure for over 10 years.

The first thing you do when you want a resource war is you demonize a people. Then you shoot them and steal their country.

I think the internet, by it's very nature, helps tear down divisive walls between nations. Sure, your leaders can tell you how evil your enemies are, but when you're playing online games with them and conversing on various forums, very quickly you can see that "Hey, these guys aren't evil demons looking to drink the blood of orphan puppies, they're just assholes like everyone else".

This. The Internet (hate to say) may be our saving grace as a species. So much harder to demonize someone you speak to on a regular basis. The crux will come when there is a global fatwā condemning griefers and bronies.

Might just be that people who are more understanding and tolerant are more willing to explore views and information that might differ from what they currently think.

Despite what the revanchist claim, television, radio, VCRs, and faxes brought down the Soviet Union and seem to be doing pretty good at bringing radical Islam to its knees. Only time will tell.

Hm, and here I thought it was running out of money and old men that knew Stalin that brought down the Soviet Union. I guess I better toss out those old revanchist textbooks...

Time to whip out the ol' correlation != causation. Maybe positive attitudes are what prompt them to watch American media on the internet in the first place. More intuitively, Muslim internet users probably correlates with upper classes who can afford that internet to begin with, and people who are prosperous probably have less grievances with the power structure in general.
