FTA: "At one point, the son dismembered his mother in order to make her easier to transport,"

He was just being practical

Thanks, Obamacare.

I'd say he solved both of their long term care problems at the same time

She really had no legs to stand on anymore.  So you have to hand it to the guy for helping her split from her medical issues.

Whoa now. Let's wait to see the full body of evidence before jumping to conclusions.

No, I'm sorry.  This simply isn't nearly extreme enough for a 'No True Floridian' claim.  Mods need to switch the tag to it's rightful state.

We "sign onto it?" Uh, no, we don't have a choice in the matter as we are born into the position of son or daughter.

Came here to say this.  You don't get a choice as to which family you're born into - gods know I'd rather be a Kardashian than an o'Doom.  You get a few choices as far as taking care of ill parents, and all have levels of suck (options: nursing home/assisted living, take care of them at home, do nothing, pass them off to a sibling/other family member).  Maybe you could say it was a choice to become her caretaker, or he was being "the good son" by providing for her care.

2013-05-31 05:53:11 PM
My parents better hope they never have to depend on me to care for them. I don't see the problem here. His only issue was improper disposal of evidence.

I can't imagine what sort of bag of sh*t could cut to pieces the woman who brought him into the world, but I'd like to see how they react to the state returning the favor.  Preferably with an adrenalin cocktail and a tree chipper.

Couldn't he have found a quick, painless way for her to make her exit - then moved silently to another location/life/situation?

Sounds like a pretty simple thing given a little forethought...

Not all mothers and fathers are good people who are kind to their children. Maybe she had it coming to her.

And at that point she was already dead. It's not like dismembering her made it any worse.

I guess there are not many ice floes in Florida.

As a few have already pointed out, the "we sign on for as sons and daughters" statement is quite ridiculous. I did not ask to be born in the first place, and chances are I might not have chosen the parents I was born to either had there been an option. There is nothing about being born that makes it something I 'signed on' for. Parents having children is a totally one way decision, the parents' choice, not the child's.

They might need one of those safe haven laws and places similar to where you can leave unwanted babies who then get put up for adoption, only for your elderly instead.

Is there any irony in the fact that he will get better care than her?

When you are a criminal there is health care for you, apparently you gain that as a right once you are incarcerated. If you are a law abiding citizen you have no such right apparently, and there is nothing for you unless you have the money for it. Funny old world.

No, funny little country. In Germany, for instance, free people get medical care if they need it. In America, they don't.

But who's going to adopt a old person who's physically falling apart and/or suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's, possibly violent, probably incontinent, etc.? Call it "warehousing" if you will, but yeah... we do need a better solution than what we have now. Some place safe and clean where the less well-off elderly can live out the remainder of their lives with some measure of dignity.

If I start trying to parse out why prisoners have a constitutional right to health care, but tax payers don't, some one is going to get stabbed

/seriously... WTF?

My mom was a chronic alcoholic who hated anybody who was more successful than her (i.e., everybody). For the last thirteen years of her life, and I suspect there was some kind of Munchausen's syndrome at play here, every holiday something would happen and BOOM, she'd be in the hospital on Death's door.
Every holiday, birthday, anniversary.
My one brother did the right thing, he moved out of state to Texas which she hated. My other brother and I were left with the burden of taking care of her, and after awhile, I considered murder as a way out.
