General Electric Salmon?

So?

It's the Washington Times, so without reading it I'll assume they're playing up the interracial-marriage aspect

Too bad they weren't made by Monsanto. The fish would be sued into not breeding anymore

yea but is it Round-UpTM ready?

They're pretty easy to catch while they're recharging.

Like I was just saying about Monsanto, these genetic engineering firms just push code out the door without any regression testing.

I like fishing for brown trout, personally.

Wait until we find out they are infected with Salmon-SARS.

Contrabulous Flabtraption: General Electric Salmon?

I had the same thought.  Also a salmon that interbreeds with trout.  A fish that could live in both salt and fresh water?  That would be pretty crazy!

But the question is could non modified versions of trout and salmon (or other fish) also mate?

I was expecting some bizarre turd fish.

/disappointed

Trout and salmon are kinda first cousins, pretty closely related, but they don't typically cross breed.

depends... does one of them like fish sticks?

How about adding a taste good gene because trout and salmon taste like  jet fuel.

Brown "trout" aren't actually trout. They're a type of European salmon, introduced to the U.S. and Australia, where they have displaced the native trout in many places. Bit of a weed fish, actually, but popular with sport fishermen because they grow quickly.

AquAdvantage Atlantic salmon is engineered with an added gene from Pacific salmon to make it grow faster, and an added gene from an eel to make it grow throughout the year.  Currently AquAdvantage eggs are created on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the fish are grown and farmed in a facility in Panama

That IS scary.  If one of these genetically engineered salmon decide to walk out of that facility and hop in a stream that happens to have wild brown trout, well we're just all screwed.

As long as there is an online graph showing me which parts are tasty fish and which parts are poisonous left over light buld debris, i'm ok with this.

If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained.
Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously.

Trout are nothing more than an off shoot of salmon that said f-it we're not swimming back out to the ocean.  This is the equivalent of a dog and a wolf getting it on.  The main issue here is that the hybrids may out compete the natural ones and poof no-more normal trout (same problem the wild cat is facing vs house cats)

I would think an effective deterrent might be to legislate that should your GE organism be found in nature, outside of the breeding facility in a state capable of breeding, you lose your patent. This on top of the lofty fines that, imo should be comparable to an oil spill, should help temper this GM foods feeding frenzy we're starting.

Uhh... North America doesn't have a very good track record with invasive species. It only takes one idiot to tilt the domino.
I think you'd do well to treat the ecosystem's balance with more respect.

I agree this is bad, but I don't think we'd be screwed. the current fish would be screwed for sure, but these things would just take over the niche in their environment and be popular on the grill.
