1) io9 sucks. It is the TMZ of "science" sites. Somebody else submitted an io9 article wondering why birds don't eat monarch butterflies, even though we've known why since the 1960s. They are truly awful.

2) FTA: "This would have cut them off from quite a few words that humans can pronounce, and may have limited their speech. Alternatively, it may have caused them to rely more heavily on tone, making their language more sing-song than most human languages. "

Fark you, you moron writer. Half the planet speak tonal languages. Just because you're too stupid to speak one doesn't make us some sort of weird exception.

With only a skeleton to go by, I can't see how they could reconstruct the exact shape and details of a Neanderthal throat and mouth.

Depends if there are muscle attachment marks on the Neanderthal bones that can be helpful to show a difference. If not, then yeah, I would love to know how they know this.

There hasn't ever been enough data to demonstrate speech or no speech in Neanderthals, let alone what sounds they might have made. They may have only had a primitive vocal communication system (like monkeys and apes today) where some sounds mean ground predator, some specify a specific predator, but no depth of content beyond that...or full on language.

So its purely speculative and not even interestingly at that. =\

/likes stuff on Neanderthals still pronounces the 'th'.

There's a joke there about using your Mom's as a guide, but of course that would be tasteless and crude.
