They will be delivered by 'Spring 2014' and operational in Spring 2015 at the earliest.

So yeah I'm sure Israel will have plenty of time to destroy them, for Russia to stomp their feet (while rubbing their hands with glee) and sell some more systems that will be delivered by 2016 and ready in 2017, when we can repeat the scenario.

I'm only just now noticing that the pilot/RIO text on the side of the cockpit is reversed. I know it wasn't a "real" shot (at the very least, the tails of both aircraft would collide), but couldn't they shoot the right side of the aircraft at least?

Israel would have no reason to destroy Syrian fighter jets.  It's one thing to attack smalls arms and munitions shipments that they fear will likely make it into the hands of Hezbollah, but what excuse would they have for blowing up some jets that have almost zero chance of ever being used against Israel offensively?

Well, the jets would be used to defend against Israel defending itself by attacking the munitions shipments, so they'll be defensively attacked.  Which is different than being offensively attacked, because that's just offensive.

An unfortunate escalation.  What happens when Russia delivers the S-300's to Syria, and Israel doesn't have air strike ability any longer?

sage37: your 'state' is utterly useless.

Some useless achievements from the last few years:

- Created a waterless toilet that turns solid waste (including toilet paper) and turns it into sterile and odorless fertilizer in 30 seconds.
- 50% of grain and pulse harvest is lost to pest and mold but an Israeli company has found a way to make it go up to 99% and they are currently distributing them in India and Africa
- Best first-responders in the world for any major disasters (see: Haiti, etc..)
- Leaders in drip-irrigation and helping all over the world in the poorest countries
- Israeli company has created a personal water purifier that can turn safe drinking water from almost any source and is distributing it in the poorest parts of the world
- Building model agricultural villages in Africa to help them be self-sufficient
- Israeli company Seambiotics found a way to turn carbon dioxide into fuel and nutraceuticals, and they are starting to help clean the air in China
- Tens of thousands of endangered animals are beign taken care of by the LAGA ngeo (Israeli)

That's just 9 of the 65 best achievements from Israel in the last 2-3 years. And that's just the environmental front, let's not even begin when it comes to, say, medicine and science at large.

Completely useless state.

First of all, Israel has already found a way around the S-300, second it will only be operational in 2015 and by then they will all be smoldering craters anyway.

Well the last time Israel went up against the Syrian air force they shot down at least 80 Syrian planes and lost only one.
The one that they lost was an old F4.
I think that Israel just about wiped out the whole Syrian air force.

2013-05-31 01:35:51 PM
Given the alternative to Assad, I'm wondering why people have a problem with this. If I were any of Syria's neighbors, I'd want stabilization, which air power would certainly help to achieve. Extra MiGs will not threaten Turkey, Israel, or any other nation immediately within striking distance; they will help to bring a close to an unpredictable civil war.

My money is on some sort of tragic accident wherein the delivery vessel runs aground on a previously uncharted reef and sinks will all hands and cargo aboard

Despite a lot of snark and over-blown doomsday reactions, what I have yet to see is a reasonable explanation of Russia's possible motivations behind giving/selling Syria A) anti-ship missiles; B) anti-aircraft missiles; and C) MiG's.  What exactly are they trying to achieve and why?

MiG 29s are for pussies. They should get some MiG 31s:

Kenneth Aubrey: When the first rumors began to filter out of the Soviet Union some three years ago, our theoretical weapons strategists stood before NATO command to explain - with much confidence - that it would take the Soviets a minimum of ten years to develop a Mach Five aircraft with thought-controlled weapons systems. I stand before you today to explain - with much regret - that we were wrong.

To be fair, Assad is the devil we know.

In the power vaccuum that would result from his regime toppling, money would be flowing in from the Saudis, Iranians, Russians, Chinese etc.

Which would be hugely destabilizing.  Some of the rebels are Al Qaeda Lite.

Only good option is a negotiated truce.

I am no Israeli apologist, in fact to say that I am not fond of Israel would be a colossal understatement.

That said, if you think for an instant Israel is not ready, willing and capable of matching or impressively outperforming any "organized military" that makes the error of sauntering into their area of influence you are sadly mistaken. Back in the day I would have said that Russia would probably eventually win due to the fact that they could sustain losses long enough while inflicting enough damage to ensure Israeli attrition but these days I'm honestly not so sure they could pull that off.

Of course this is all just an internet game of Deadliest Warrior, wherein everything is speculation but still. There really isn't a country in the world that wouldn't pause at the idea of engaging Israel in declared warfare. Even Iran, for all their bluster, isn't stupid enough to plunge headlong into a conflict with them.

Also, I'm assuming conventional warfare and again, I've got no love for Israel as a state.

They're trying to maintain their relations with those countries hostile to Israel, because those countries are also hostile to the U.S.

MiG 29 is a sweet plane, maneuverable and rugged, about on a par with an F-18 C. Quality of piloting would be the decisive factor.
