"I, then as now, felt immensely grateful that I lived at a moment when my government chose to invest in me. It has been a smart investment "

Has it?   How much have you paid in taxes versus the cost of those programs?  I want to see numbers, we could have let you die in the street and someone else would be doing your job and paying those taxes.

But what if they are on drugs? Shouldn't we test for that? I mean, if you have drugs you shouldn't be eating. That's science.

You aren't truly poor if you have dirt and grass you can eat.

Fact: I've got the power.

87% of SNAP recipients have had someone in their household work in the past year.

But they're lazy, atheist, soshulist scum!  -GOP

Pro-tip, dildos:  If you'd pay them a good wage, they wouldn't have to get SNAP, but since your outrage is your surrogate erection in lieu of being flaccid bags of douche, I can see why you'd not want to do that.

I wonder if a laser like focus on job creation in the House could actually reduce the amount we spend on SNAP?

Did Trish Thomas Henley ever cook a pigeon over a tire fire? Maybe if she had been a little more rugged, she could have found ways to eat without using out tax money.

COUNTERPOINT

FOOD STAMPS DO NOT WORK.

by Craig T Nelson

I'm an emmy winning actor perhaps best known to you as Hayden Fox on the pretty awesome show Coach.  You might also know me from my role on Parenthood.  But my filmography has dozens of references to various TV shows and movies I have been in.

Much like this lady, I also have been on food stamps and welfare.  But did anyone help me out?  No.  I did it all on my own.

2013-05-31 10:50:48 AM
Wow. 0.3-0.5% GDP, that's budget breaking.

That's almost 5% of our entire military budget! In fact, if we canceled SNAP today, we could fund another Iraq war in just under 100 years.

Fund a war?! Fund a war?! Who the hell does that? The oil will pay for everything!!!!

Also Trish Thomas Henley sounds like a white name, so she was using SNAP (AFDC at the time).

My issue is with minorities who get a program called welfare that allows them to buy smartphone compatible steaks on rims.

FTFA:Fact: SNAP benefits drive economic growth in every community. Every $1 in new SNAP benefits generates up to $1.80 of economic activity.

So all we need to do is increase SNAP by 3 trillion dollars and all out economic woes will be gone.

Look, its not that they don't care about children eating. They just think the church has plenty of food. And have you ever had an old black woman from a church fry you some chicken? Fark! Why WOULDN'T you want to live in a shelter?

No, no, no. We privatize the oil, we borrow our war costs. So if we cancel now, we can pay for 10 more years in Iraq. You know, someday.

Serious Black: You aren't truly poor if you have dirt and grass you can eat.

But the rich aren't rich enough so they need more tax breaks.

Give the 1% a massive tax break and there is no stopping them from investing it offshore or hoarding it.  Give a starving person food stamps and they will immediately inject it back into an American business.

Pffft. I'm sure the illegals just take their SNAP cards right back to Mexico.

Somebody else said something similar, but I'm going to say it again. The Republican's strategy (and they seem to be helped by the D's on this one) is to offshore all of the middle class jobs, bringing everyone down, then getting rid of any assistance to keep them from starving, all while making sure guns are freely available to anybody that might want one.
I can't see anywhere that this could go wrong at all.

2013-05-31 11:00:04 AM
There may be some success stories, but these stories will get more press. Thirty years ago, those long-term customers of food stamps were much more prevalent in my area but that seems to be turning around with a lot of the changes that states are making in order to reduce costs to the program.

Exactly.  Everyone knows that the purpose, the whole point of the US Government, is to amass as much wealth as possible.

Counter-Counter-Counter Point
by Ayn Rand

I was one of the unlucky ones that got hit by cancer.  Sure, it was lung cancer as a direct result of my own actions (smoking) so it was completely my own fault.  But look, doctors cost a lot of money and I would have been totally wiped out and probably died decades earlier with no treatment.  So yes, I took Medicare and Social Security payments.  What else was I to do?

But I don't need it anymore, so government programs like Medicare, Social Security and SNAP are full of looters, parasites and moochers using the levers of government to steal the fruits of our labor.  This practice must be stopped.

I spent several years as a child with my family on food stamps and various government assistance from the free lunch program, to housing after a devastating flood.

I'm ok with people being helped.  If it's government waste, I'd  much rather the waste occur helping people and not trying to screw or kill them.

If the state is willing to go out of its way to give you that option, I have no problems with people taking advantage of every opportunity they are offered. The problem is whether it should be offered in the first place.

I am not able to stand by and watch silently while Congress votes to allow people to go hungry while simultaneously subsidizing agribusiness

I agree that we need to end farm subsidies. Many of which increase the price of food. But what does that have to do with the bills in question?

2013-05-31 11:08:34 AM
All of the points she makes are valid.  The program is effective and the most common criticisms have little basis in fact.
That said, just because a program is working well doesn't mean that marginally cutting its funding is bad, or that marginally increasing that funding is good.
All that the article proves is that the program shouldn't be eliminated or subject to major reform.

You also have to consider the cost savings of potentially jailing you for peeing on the sidewalk.

A success case, and good for this person.

In the 90s there was a program at the local DSS where my mother worked. Long story short it offered anyone who qualified the chance to get a two year degree. Everything, and I do mean everything, was provided so don't even try to start making excuses as to why some people "couldn't". If you can name a reason somebody might not be able to attend, it was covered. Period. The only thing anyone had to do was sign up and go to classes.

More than 2000 people in this small town qualified.

About 100 expressed interest in it.

Two signed up.

One actually finished it up and got a degree.

So what do we say about the other 2000 people? Beyond 'Here's a check' I mean.

You probably believe the wealthy create jobs when they get tax cuts though. Amirite?
