Qellaqan: farm machine: Watched the beginning of this on ESPN last night.  The majority of the contestants were of Asian descent.  Made it pretty clear as to what nationalities/races within the U.S. value education and which ones have their priorities elsewhere.

I agree with one of your points: asians value education more. My high school had tons of them, and damn they were stiff competition.

The other implicit point, that the spelling bee is about education I don't agree with. Being a human spell-check has all the utility of knowing pi to 10,000 digits. Whoopty frickin doo, every computer in the world is still better than you. And in spanish, there wouldn't even be such a thing.

In the process of learning to spell those words, they learn meaning and usage.  They learn etymology.  It enhances (at least theoretically) their capacity for communication.  I don't see how that is a useless thing.

Although true, spelling bees are just silly and useless.
One of the benefits of having over 4 billion Asians and an ocean between us is that we get the best of the best when they immigrate.

I thought they were running Slumdog Millionaire until I saw the logo.

They don't show sumo anymore, but they'll run a spelling bee.  Dafuq?

More like which ones value spelling competitions.

So the vocabulary thing didn't work. Bee organizers are going to have think of a different way to eliminate the non-white children in the earlier rounds.

The National Spelling Bee site has an online test where the public can humiliate themselves in the privacy of their own cubicle.
