Wow for once cop math is pretty good

2013-05-31 10:29:06 AM
Authorities intercepted two speedboats -- sinking one -- and recovered about 13,000 pounds of cocaine worth almost $1 billion. Indeed, that's billion with a B

That's nice.  Two observations:

1. Cop math
2. Street prices and availability unaffected.

But we're winning, right?

FTFA: ""These two disruptions are an example of the international cooperative law enforcement effort to disrupt transnational criminal activity and deny their profiting from such activity," Doug Garner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's director of national air security operations in Jacksonville, Florida, said in a news release.

Yet they admit they only stop about 1% of shipments...

Cocaine is worth $77,000 a pound? What kind of math is that?

So, $99 billion got in then.  Or would that be $75 billion by cop math.

Stone Meadow: Cocaine is worth $77,000 a pound? What kind of math is that?

Fairly accurate math, slightly high, but not by too much

1 pound = 16oz = 448g

1g = ~$60-$80 (after its cut)

448g * $80 = $35840

Double the amount when its cut down the line and I get $71,680 / pound.

13,000 pounds = 208,000 ounces

Give it a generous $2000 an ounce wholesale = $416,000,000.

But closer to $250 mil is more like it.

I'm guessing the cops will have to cut this about 4 times over to get to a billion dollars, but these are cops, so nothing would surprise me.

I'm not a fan of the war on drugs either but this type of action is exactly where efforts should be focused, not on addicts.

Using street prices as a measure of success doesn't make sense. Dealers charge what the market will pay.

Phew!

I paid the hookers in advance. I got a little nervous...don't have that kind of trunk space.

I wonder why they put the bundles in stacks and so neatly placed on the tarmac?  I guess they like to waste government employees time.

For the record, there are 453.4 grams in a pound.  Drug addicts just simplify the math and end up shorting themselves.

Here is the thing I don't understand.  They have a product worth millions of dollars, and they put it in that farking dingy of a boat?

These guys should hire me as a consultant.  I'd get them a sub from russia with just one shipments worth of profit.

To be fair, this was about 1% of South America's annual output in a single bust.  So maybe they'll stop 2% by the end of the year.

And it will only cost the taxpayers 3x the "street" value of the product.  At a certain point, it's probably just best to buy up the world supply and call it a day.
