What did they think was going to happen? Its Russia. Only thing dumber is giving the games to Rio, where there are parts of the city even the Police wont go into.

Next thing you know we'll discover China was violently cracking down on "dissidents"  leading up the Beijing games.

Opening ceremony: the oligarchs get broken on the wheel.

Both the IOC and FIFA need to get off this "large sporing events as international aid" pedestal they've put themselves on. They deserve everything they get with the Sochi Olympics and the Qatar World Cup which I still can't believe hasn't been taken back.

50 billion dollars to run the olympics. jesus christ.

almandot: 50 billion dollars to run the olympics. jesus christ.

The  Winter Olympics. When London 2012 supposedly cost $14 billion and they turned a small profit while Beijing 2008 supposedly cost $40 billion.

Translation: Even minus the $30 billion in corrupt money, Sochi will be very expensive and I think the IOC will be quite pissed off when it's all said and done.

And just remember, these Olympics are right next door to Chechnya, Dagistan, and other lovely places which have much love for Russia and the western world.  Remember Russia is arming the Syrian government whom are using the weapons to kill many of these fighters from these areas around where the Olympics will be held.  I can see nothing in these facts that would concern me in the least about the safety and security of the coming Sochi games.  Besides, no one has every thought of doing anything during the Olympics.

Corruption? Scandal? That's just how they do the Olympics, isn't it? Right Salt Lake City? Right?

There's literally no way the IOC didn't see this coming.

Go into? No.

Fly over in a helicopter and unleash a thunderstorm of lead? Yes.

Sochi will be the safest place in Russia. No way the Chechen gangsters will allow the jihadis spoil the show

1972 had a hostage standoff and 14 deaths
1996 had a bomb, deaths, and then a false arrest / media circus / general ineptitude

The "West" hasn't exactly been completely idiot proof when it comes to running these things.

I agree about Qatar 22 World Cup though. Players will be dying on the pitch, and the government will be suppressing the news / paying out hush money.

I'm sure the state departments of various countries are going to have a great time negotiating the release of everyone that gets the book thrown at them for doing various unislamic things while over there.

Yeah, I mean...forget just the players, do they expect to enforce their laws against all of the fans that attend?  Potentially millions?

World Cup soccer fans in no way want to drink alcohol or have hot women wear revealing clothing.

One of my favorite memories of grad school was the 1994 World Cup.  Brazil was in the bracket playing in Stanford's stadium, and it seemed that most of Brazil moved up to Palo Alto.  Game days were utter paralysis on the roads around the stadium since they were filled with partying Brazilians.

This was exactly as awesome as you'd expect
