I have a sidearm. That's it. Come into my home and it's over before it started. I think a lot of the "gun grabbers" are being misconstrued as hating firearms in general. They aren't coming for you, you histrionic pussies. But being a liberal doesn't mean I'm coming for your freedoms, or whatever.

But by all means, keep selling that bumper sticker talking point. It's the only reason you're holding office, anyway.

Meh, I'm pretty much an "extremist" (i.e. I agree with the majority of the non-American industrialized world) in that I believe in guns should ideally be all but unavailable to anyone except military and law enforcement and such, and that the 2nd amendment is an obsolete relic of a different historical time that really should be scrapped.  But with the zillions of untraceable guns in America today, trying to confiscate everyone's guns at this point would be about as realistic as trying to round up and deport all the illegal aliens, so I really don't have a good solution short of "emigrate to your favoriteEuropean country".

Anyway, even the libbiest of libs tend to disagree with me, let alone the dirty stinking LINOs actually in power, so...

Emails are a close analogue to letters, which existed in the 18th century.

A 21st century analogue to a militia capable of toppling a tyrannical government or helping the US military ward off a foreign invader would be armed with weapons even the NRA isn't demanding be legalized.

One of Utah's top gun lobbyists was arrested this week after he allegedly used a 2.5-ton Army surplus vehicle to threaten the lives of his ex-wife's family, but his lawyer insisted that he was simply "having fun in his big boy toy."

Big Boy Toy. Is that the legal definition?

"[He] honked the air horn, pulled into the residence, running over the lawn and almost striking her vehicle,"

No, nothing slightly immature about that.

I'm also loving the comparison of email to high capacity firearms., the threat of death to anyone entering an idiots proper'tie, and the whole idea that you would even hear me coming.

Small penis syndrome. Y'all got it.

Assault Rifle? Let's assume you mean something like an AK-47 or an M4. The yokels in other countries use AK's just fine and dandy, and the U.S. military seems to defend themselves just fine with the M4. What makes an assault rifle not good for home defense? I've been a fan of zombie movies and books since I was a kid. I remember when the ONLY zombie or "zombie like" movies you could find were shot on video tape or were, more likely, made in Italy, but for the life of me I do not understand these people who go out and spend real money on stuff for a zombie apocalypse. Uniforms, backpacks, boot, weapons, stockpiled ammo and food, etc... just WTF...

The people who scare me are the women who forget the have one and it goes off in a Starbucks when it falls out of her purse. Or the yahoo on the next block who puts a round through my window while target shooting in his back yard. Or the ones who let their five year old play with a rifle unsupervised.

I wish groups like the NRA would spend less time howling about how the negro in the WH wants to steal their guns, and more time trying to teach the idiots that they're scaring a little basic common sense.

Ya want a good home defense gun get a 20Ga pump with a full choke and load it with birdshot (number 7 or 8), why? get one and go shoot it into ballistic gel at 20 feet or less (standard room distance) and notice the massive wound channel, now get a couple of 2x4s and some drywall and make  a standard interior house wall between you and the gel and fire it into that from the same distance, yes it will shred the wall but notice how little shrapnel hits the gel block, The last thing ya want in a home defense gun is to miss your target and accidentally gutshoot your neighbors kid. Most people who own guns never practice with them and so the shotgun is ideal, unless of course ya go with the famous 12 ga loaded with 00 buck and blast away inside a house killing everyone except your target.
Get a cable style bicycle lock, run it up through the loading port and out the open chamber, loop it around your bedframe and then tuck it up under the bed. If you leave the lock set so that it is only one number off the combo and file a spot on the side so you can tell by feel where that tumbler is you can reach down, open the lock pull the cable free and rack the slide in just a few seconds yet have the gun basically childproof.

/and for Gods sake keep your finger OUT of the triggerguard till you have absolutely positively identified your target and decided ya want it dead. in the nearly 50 years I have been a gun owner I have investigated what I thought was burglars probably 30-40 times, of those most were the Old Lady or the kid wandering around after a late night snack only twice was it actually burglars and both times the sight of a large naked hairy dude with a shotgun caused them to go into shock and surrender without me even having to raise the gun.

I disagree...the NRA thinks the AR15 should be legal (as do I) and it's a perfectly adequate weapon for either of the last two purposes you cite.

Going head-to-head with tanks and jets isn't how you win insurgencies, or defeat modern invaders, when using primarily rifles; see, for example, Vietnam and Afghanistan.

Shoot up the support vehicles, and a modern tank quickly becomes a very expensive pillbox full of hungry guys.

Jets?  shoot the sentries at the airfield, shoot the aircraft on the ground, and shoot the mechanics.
Not very sporting, but war isn't a sport.

brainiac-dumdum: When defending your home one generally does not want anything capable of zipping bullets through walls as if they were jello.

Since that standard encompasses pretty much every gun, what do you recommend instead? Any effective shotgun round (i.e., not birdshot) will penetrate walls and involves more flying projectiles that increase the likelihood of harming someone on the other side.

Personally, I think a shotgun is a great choice for self-defense in the home. It's easier to aim than a pistol (particularly when adrenaline is involved) and packs more of a punch than handgun rounds. That said, a rifle is not a bad choice: it has similar advantages to a shotgun, but only fires one projectile at a time, and thus poses less of a risk to bystanders. If you're firing something like .223 from a rifle, the recoil is minimal.

Anyway, the guy described in the article sounds a bit douchey. You can have fun in your 'big boy toy' in an appropriate place and that's cool, but not on your ex-wife's lawn.

Bird shot has been demonstrated to be completely ineffective at your stated purpose.  It will do damage to surface tissue but will not do anything to actually stop someone (meaning put a hole in them deep enough to cause a serious incapacitating wound).  There is a reason that most LEOs use #4 buckshot.

log_jammin: so if you were shot at distance consistent with a home defense scenario, it wouldn't be "effective" on you?

I certain wouldn't want to be shot by anything, which is one of the many reasons I don't go around committing crimes. Similarly, I'd hope to avoid ever being in a self-defense situation, especially one where I would need to shoot an intruder. I'd almost certainly flee, if at all possible, call the cops, and let them deal with it.

That said, birdshot causes extensive but superficial wounds but doesn't penetrate deeply enough to be effective at stopping someone who is motivated, on certain types of drugs, or decides to keep attacking an armed person. It might well stop some people, and that's great, but its not unreasonable to use something that's more effective in a wide variety of situations.

I'm not aware of any self-defense training program or other expert that recommends birdshot for self-defense.
