2 ricin letters in country full of gun nuts doesn't really establish a trend

It's kind of like frequent isolated incidents I suppose.

They frequently broadcast a desire to murder people that disagree with them on a narrow political point.

no, it's not really frequent at all when you consider the millions upon millions of gun nuts in the country.

If you want to parse the shiat out of the word frequent, feel free. It's frequent enough that this doesn't surprise me at all.

"willing to kill their opponents". You have to show a willingness to actually do that - ya know, by shooting at them or sending ricin in the mail. ITG (and the IRL equivalent) bravado shows a willingness to make a fool of yourself in order to impress others  - it doesn't show a willingness to kill

What if it's an anti-gun nut pretending to be a pro-gun nut? Stranger things have happened.

Less commonly considered is the possibility of an attempted implication of an innocent person, with any presented political message being part of that effort rather than a sincere expression of protest.

If another Elvis impersonator is arrested, that would be weird.

That would be fantastic. I mean, what are the odds?

And by "pro-gun nuts" you mean anyone who believes in an individual right to own a firearm, right?  Just trying to gauge how sweeping a generalization you intended to make.

So you are saying everyone who owns a gun wants to assassinate the president?

/confused

I wouldn't say that all or even many people who own guns want to assassinate any president, but I'd bet that most of the people who do want to assassinate the president likely own at least one gun.

Is this terrorism, or an assassination attempt?

Is there an official count of how many times people have attempted to assassinate the current American president?

But whoever it is, you know for sure it's not some gun rights advocate. That's just not possible, because a real gun advocate would own guns. And if he owns guns, that means he passed a background check to get them. And if he passed a background check to get them, that means he's mentally fit as a fiddle!

dr_blasto: There's a whole retail industry revolving around burying shiat in your backyard inside PVC pipes. Supposedly, if you bury your soon-to-be-taken AR or AK in a PVC pipe with end caps threaded on and sealed, then bury it right over your sewer line, they'll never find it because they'll think the metal is just the sewer pipe.

I've heard of sewer lines made out of clay, and I've heard of sewer lines made out of concrete. I've heard of sewer lines made out of ABS, and then there's that space-age stuff they use when they "burst" a failed clay pipe to replace it. I've even heard of sewer lines made out of wood - in Tacoma, WA a few years ago workmen discovered old side sewers made out of cedar, which had held up surprisingly well for over a century.

But one thing I've never heard of is a sewer line made from any kind of metal. I could be wrong, of course, but I don't believe they exist.

Which makes your story even funnier.

In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, you're supposed to powder to ricin so fine it makes lingering white clouds of dust when shaken. That gets inhaled.

Ricin is a catalytic poison. It can rape a cell's ribosomes into gibbering goo, and come out unharmed and head for the next one.

You need a ball mill to really get it fine enough. See the book by Uncle Fester.

stoli n coke: WABC in New York is reporting a person of interest being questioned in Bumfark, TX. Wife narc'd on him. Apparently, this rocket scientist was keeping the ricin in his fridge.

Makes sense, actually. Ricin is a biomolecule. A protein. That means bacteria can eat it. Moist ricin becomes a truly putrid brownish mess with snotlike tendrils running through it if it's at room temperature for any meaningful timeframe.

Trying to make ricin, though, is a serious pain in the ass because you have to crack open the beans. And castor beans are hard. Even if you soak them in lye for an hour, they're still murder to open. By contrast, soak a nail clipping in lye for an hour and it'll disintegrate into its component amino acids.
