They're terminating the lease so they can ditch the current store mgmt.  Then they'll get someone else to run a grocery in the same place.

How can it not be one of the poorest if it is THE poorest?

How?

If you made a list of the poorest, would it not be included?

Reservations are a pretty silly idea.  How about you join the rest of us and participate in the country like a normal person.  Nobody alive is responsible for the past, time to cut the umbilical cord.

Hopefully they actually have someone lined up to take over...rather than just assuming someone will want to.

FTA: "The tribe claims, among other concerns, that the store has repeatedly sold spoiled meat to customers, overprices its goods, and employs the majority of its 64 employees for less than 40 hours per week so it doesn't have to provide benefits."

So it sounds like the Native Americans have learned capitalism well.

Let's give them all the lands that were promised to them in the original treaties. That's a good starting point, don't you think?

What bigger reservations is the answer?   How is that assimilation?   Sounds more like trying to maintain (in this case) a near stone age hunter gather culture.  Then there  is the problem of other tribes having competing claims for much of the same land so that whole tribal warfare thing starts up again and we end up looking like Africa.

The Buffalo are not going to roaming the prairies by the millions again and the Lakota are not going to be able to go back to a time when they could hunt from horse back when they weren't busy fighting with, killing or enslaving members of other tribes like the Cree. or Mandan. Get over your second place finish the North American wars and join the 21stt Century.

Looks like the poorest Natives in the country probably missed that lesson.

Anyway, it really is silly to keep this stuff going.  Like... your culture is gone.  We're not building Red-Hair enclaves to preserve the ginger gene, and you're basically dying out in any appreciable numbers.  The Tribe isn't quite "no more," yet, but you're getting there.  You're either poor or vice peddlers and i n either case you have a terrible rep for drinking... POSSIBLY because you're clinging to a past that can no longer help you or be applicable to your lives.  And that's sad, I'm sure you had a cool culture and all that but cool and practical don't always fit.

Cool and survivable don't always fit either.  Native culture has essentially been extinct for at least a century.  Just get over it and move on.  Or don't I guess, live in squalor, not my problem.

No, we should go back further.  Order every non-Native out, pack up everything, and declare the Western Hemisphere off-limits to all non-Native people except a random group of Scandinavians every few centuries.  Let it revert to the Stone Age paradise it was.

His point is that we did not create them.  As in the current generation.  Good point in theory, a little difficult in application.

Who cares?

A separate nation is allowed to camp in the middle of one that mostly has its shiat together.  Separate nation status requires self-governance that does something to further the benefit of the citizens.

Don't like it?  Too bad--the wars are over--time to assimilate, get some education & a job,  and go back to the rez for a camping trip during vacation.

Another way to look at it--the poverty of an undeveloped caveman-like culture that hasn't progressed much in the last 450 years isn't my problem.  The Amish know how to make a go of it shunning virtually all modern conveniences, while still holding onto old traditions.

Pray 4 Mojo: What about the money from their casino?

They indeed do have a casino.  It's in the middle of gorram absolutely nowhere, on the busiest road that crosses Pine Ridge (613 vehicles per day, by the last traffic count).  In a state that has gambling literally everywhere. (You know the 'Starbucks on all four corners of an intersection' phenomenon in big cities?  It's like that with crappy mini-casinos in Sioux Falls.)   It doesn't make a whole lot of money.  Probably most of the 15-20 slot-addicts are residents of the res.
