Boo.... mine was better....

""People collecting disability" would be the 8th largest state. In other stupid comparison news, "People who Annoy the Fark out of me" would be the 5th largest country "

And as was pointed out in the red lit thread, if Poverty was a state it would be the most populous state*.

Fat? You can go on disability.
Don't like people? Do they scare you? You can say you have a phobia or mental illness and go on disability.
Just plain lazy and don't want to work. Yes, you too can go on disability.

What a country!

I am guessing the 3rd one is an off-shoot of #1 & #2 in your mind.  I am not guessing you can go straight in and say "I'm lazy" and get disability.  You probably can get something made up enough to essentially do that though, as you pointed out.

No, you don't say you're lazy but you say you have a social phobia, some kind of fear, and they not only put you on disability but give you a service animal to help you deal with the stress of having to deal with the outside world. And you can take your monkey, pony, whatever, into stores and if they say you can't have your pony in there you can sue them. I'm not a conservative by the way. I have just seen and read about all this stuff happening way too much. There have been countless stories about it here.

My Aunt works at Social Security and she processes disability claims. Guess what? They reject WAY more claims than they approve, and it takes months to process a claim. Plus, if they find out later that you are faking it, you can  go to jail. They don't just hand out money to anyone who applies.

Also, the current average disability payment is $950 per month. Woo hoo! Gravy train! That might be a lot for some people, I guess.

Disability fraud does happen, a lot. It gets investigated and prosecuted, too. This guy got 2 years in prison for disability fraud:

Over a six-year period beginning in 2006, Velasquez falsely certified that dozens of able-bodied patients were disabled, according to court documents.

I'm not sure if it's like this now but a few years back, standard procedure was to reject every single first time claim. I had 38 years of medical records to back up my claim and I still had to file an appeal.

It's a great deal for those that can't find work for 950 a month.  That's not too far below 40 hours minimum wage in many areas, and of course many in this economy can't find full time work.  But of course the solution is a living wage that makes work including significant part time hours a lot more appetizing than a disability benefit.

I can see it now we are looking the next welfare queens. Stories of imaginary people living the good life, driving a Cadillac on the backs of the poor tax payers. I have friend who lives on his disability income (motorcycle accident, not just a phobia) his budget allows him to spend about $40 a week on groceries. Not really the phat life Walker seems to be envisioning.

I remember that guy that was on tv for being an adult baby and he revealed he was getting disability for some social phobia. Some congressman in his state moved to cut him off because he didn't want tax payers putting up the cash for his 24 hour a day fetish and he threatened to kill himself, so everyone called him a big baby which he probably fapped to.

But yeah, we have lots of old fat people and this will continue. Some will be legit, others won't. We keep gutting the wrong things, like enforcement.

Countless you say? How many is that? In a country of 1/3 a billion people, how many people are "allowed" to have a very real and debilitating phobia.

You may not be a conservative, but you share a despicable trait in common: If a few people cheat (insert government program)  then the program must be shut down, and anyone who supports it is bad and should feel bad.

What if I'm super anxious? Can I get a monkey and a pony? 'Cause that would be pretty cool, especially if you could train the monkey to ride the pony. I was going to say that going on disability for measly $950/month didn't seem worth it, but the thought of a pony/monkey combo really sweetened the deal for me. Do they pay for all the monkey chow and pony kibble?

Am I?

I remember entering Walmart about several months ago, which was a short time after the Debbie Rose Case. This case involved a monkey owner who was denied access to one of the Walmart restaurants because she had her monkey with her. She claims that the monkey was a service animal that she carried with her to lessen anxiety, due to a nervous condition.

take # of blind/disabled payments divide by population and then compare to that states politics and you've got a fairly accurate map. Good luck.

I used to feel the same way until my dad had multiple heart surgeries and had half his heart basically die, which ended up putting him on disability.  Up until his last few months, he was able to mow the lawn (and most pushmowers are self-propelled now, a five-year old could do it) and work on the car.  Of course, after he did he'd have to go sleep for 14 hours because that was all his body could handle.  Judging by your judgement of this guy, I'd assume you don't know him all that well and it's very possible he's incapable of regular work even if he can do chores around the house.  Sure, there are abusers of the system, but that doesn't mean it's not necessary.

By the way the woman who sued because her university wouldn't let her have a guinea pig "emotional support animal" won her lawsuit and the university had to pay her $40,000. WHAT A COUNTRY!

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Grand Valley State University has reached a $40,000 settlement with a student who sued to keep a guinea pig in a campus apartment for emotional support.

Velzen has chronic depression and uses a pacemaker. Her attorney said the guinea pig "provides her with emotional support and attachment (reducing symptoms of depression), and physiological and psychological benefits."

http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2013/03/gvsu_reache s_ 40000_settlement.html

Yeah, I've had chronic depression since birth, can I bring a pony to work?

And to those that don't think there are pony emotional support animals:

http://www.guidehorse.org/news_emot_supt.htm

From the article:
For example a person who was traumatized by a mugging could get diagnosed with Agoraphobia and gain the right to keep a ESA pony in an area where no pets are allowed.
