So, Monsanto will bribe the Government to turn the other way, then sue the farmer for unauthorized growing of Monsanto proprietary seeds.

Please, stop with the fearmongering. Farmers have been cultivating hybrid strains of plants for centuries. You mix and match to get the traits you want.

That's all Monsanto's doing.

Monsanto is pushing code out to production without any regression testing.  That's the problem.

Farmers mix & match with the living plants pollinating & breeding the way they're intended to do naturally.  That's fine & dandy.  Monsanto isn't doing that.  They're genetically altering through viral injection to get the traits they want.  Big difference there.

Mmm... TFA says Monsanto dropped its field trials because no farmers would buy GMO wheat because foreign importers wouldn't buy it.  The government didn't reject Round Up Ready wheat, Monsanto didn't pursue getting it approved... bit of a difference.

As fun as it is to hate Monsanto, what are the nefarious intentions here?  Maybe I'm missing something.

^ This.  I never let a build leave development until it's been thoroughly tested.  Monsanto, on the other hand, pushes it right out the door.

At some point this is going to bite millions of people, and not in a good spot.

They have a history of suing independent farmers that refuse to use their seeds when this type of situation happens.   How the fark do you think they got control of nearly all of the soybean production in this country.

Hungary won't tolerate GMO seeds, burns 1,000 acres of corn

Think you can plant genetically modified seeds with your crop and no one will notice? Better not try it in Hungary, where agriculture officials literally took a scorched-Earth approach to GMO seeds

Mose: As fun as it is to hate Monsanto, what are the nefarious intentions here? Maybe I'm missing something.

Not hard to imagine, really.

If this is found to be widespread, the buyers that have rejected GMO wheat in the past are suddenly faced with "Buy this or go hungry, because now it's just part of the crop and cannot be isolated. And now that you're on board, we'll go get that approval now. Farmer Bob? It would be a real shame if we find our wheat in your crop. Never mind that you didn't know it was in there."

2013-05-30 11:25:15 AM
I thought Monsanto GM crops were intentionally made sterile so that farmers would have to buy seeds every year.  Is that not the case?

2013-05-30 11:26:21 AM
Seed producers have made farmers sign contracts for years,  Crops such as soybeans which don't hybridize in most cases companies will not allow you to save seend from year to year.

Crops such as corn that hybridize don't need such a contreact as saving the seed will produce less in successive generations.

Most times companies will refuse to sell you the hybrized crops if you keep the seeds of the non-hybridized crops.

2013-05-30 11:26:43 AM
We need genetic hacktivists to make Roundup-proof weeds and spread them everywhere, then people would stop buying that crap because it doesn't work.

yeah that is generally monsato's procedure:  you didn't isolate your crops from receiving our plants' pollen that we made no attempt to restrict, so therefore you stole our product and we sue you

Like any godly American corporation, their goal is to corner the world market and secure a monopoly for their products. The "patented" crops cross-polinate with natural crops so that the resulting hybrids carry genetic markers owned by Monsanto. Then they will patent-troll anyone who tries to grow food.

I don't really have a problem with genetically-modifying crops. You want to make a tomato larger or more delicious or purple? Knock yourself out.
What i have a problem with, is genetically-modifying crops so that you can spray them with a fark-ton *more* weedkillers and pesticides. Not to mention the 'seedless' characteristic, so farmers become dependent on buying new seeds every year.

So I don't think Monsanto is evil for wanting GMO crops. And I don't think GMO crops are evil, in and of themselves. Yet the specific GMO crops that Monsanto wants are pretty close to pure farkin evil.

But instead of talking about the specifics and reasonable guidelines and tests and impacts, we've got the stupidest 'conversation' on record. We have luddites, arguing from a position of ignorance, an archetypal fear of the unknown, seeking a blanket ban. And we have would-be 21st century robber-barons arguing for the right to make whatever-the-fark-they-want -- damn the environment, damn the security of the food supply, damn the national interest -- simply because they can and they want to make a profit.

draypresct: To anyone claiming this is due to some dastardly plan of Monsanto's . . .  how, exactly do they profit from this?

I'm not sure it's a plan so much as a byproduct of testing their crops in open fields, which then cross-pollinate with non-engineered strains.
