How does one go about being Mormon agnostic? In the article, it sounds like he's an atheist ex-Mormon.

The most important part of this story, definitely.

"Recovering Mormon"

The fark is "Mormon agnostic"? Maybe I'm just being thick this morning but I'm pretty sure those two are mutually exclusive.

They did say "Mormon".

//also, "Kansas"

Ten comments in, and the "why can't gay people pretend they don't exist" crowd" is already making a strong showing. Impressive.

/ When athletes coming out stops being rare, it'll stop being news

Atchison, eh?  Hell, they'll be talking about this for months.  Probably the biggest thing to happen to Atchison since the steakhouse by the river changed ownership.

When Jason Collins came out, despite it being a "first" and therefore somewhat newsworthy, about half of the commentary was along the lines of "why should I care," "why does he need to rub it in our faces," and, of course, lots of charming variations on "his career is ending so he's admitting he's a butt-pirate just to get attention, why can he just keep the fact thay he smokes pole private."

What became very obvious very quickly is that most of the people saying this stuff really did have a problem with gayness in general, but they realized that the social climate is at a point where they can't just say that, so they suddenly declared that being gay was now totally accepted, so there was no reason for gay people to ever declare their existence ever again.

We generally don't care about people in other arenas coming out because it happens all the time, but it's still fairly rare for athletes. When openly gay athletes are commonplace, this will actually not be news.

I don't disagree with any particular point and as I said, "I'm sure those posts are coming" but there were only two posts so far that were along those lines and they were both pretty mild. Most people were making fun of subby's shiat headline. You're not helping anything by being overly reactionary or blaming this thread for comments that were made in a different one or on a different site.

"Recovering Mormon"

This is the proper term.  It is what we call ourselves when we leave, either forcibly or voluntarily.

Not much different than the people that go on and on about their religion (or lack of)  - or their vegan diet - or their political point of view - or their Facebook status.  Personally - I don't care.

Excellent point.  I also don't understand the argument of "why do I need to know about an athlete's sexuality?  That should be private."  I imagine these people don't think the same thing when an article mentions Jeter's latest girlfriend, or an athlete showing up at an event with his wife and kids.

Why not start your own fad to replace it like celibate gayness. That way you can be gay without all the buttseks.
