There isn't a big box LEFT and a big box RIGHT, and such-and-such ideals or philosophies or policies only exist in some pure form that fit into only one box. Seeing only a black or white, binary world is a pretty primitive way of looking at things. Not a very intellectually designed world-view, I'd say.

And one day the left will be the guys advocating for forced redistribution of wealth under a soviet committee while the right-wing will be the guys advocating for forced redistribution of wealth under a central leader. Ya know... relative.

The pendulum might swing that hard back to the left, but barring some amazing super-catastrophic collapse of the social/capitalism you see everywhere today I don't see how it would go that far.  If that happened, things would be so shiatty forced redistribution might be the only way to keep civilization alive - that's a sci-fi scenario more than a real-world fear right now.  The forced redistribution part of it takes the whole left/right idea out because whoever controls the redistribution gets the goods, regardless of whether they call themselves socialists or capitalists or republicans or what.

That's Herr Doktor Comrade Stalinhitler, Ph.D., MRSA, WTF, BBQ, (Ret), to you, peon. Let me see your papers.

I never understood this idea.  Government jobs pay money that gets taxed and is spent, the spending gets taxed, the sellers who receive the money pay taxes and spend, which gets taxes....etc.  I'm not saying that the government should be the engine of our economy, it absolutely shouldn't.  But it's a great way to occasionally keep the real engine from completely stalling till the fuel lines clear (or whatever metaphor you prefer).  Austerity during shiatty times doesn't work, we've seen that historically and recently.

Mrbogey: Virtual Pariah: Who speaks for the left?

Democrats. Pay attention and stop moving goalposts and No True Scotsman-ing the situation.

Why is it that the left-wing in America insists they're centrists and the only true left-winger who ever existed is Lenin and Marx? Stop with this retarded slide-rule comparison to the rest of the world.

"Derp.. we're not supporting Maoism or a generic far right-wing boogeyman so we must be centrists!"

Do you support expanded gov't powers into dictating social and economic equalization? Congrats, you're on the left. Get your free Che shirt and name tag and gather in the lobby while waiting for the show to start.

As usual, you are as wrong as it is possible for one to be - reality is exactly opposite of what you've said here. It isn't Democrats saying, "We're not liberals; we're centrists." It's liberals saying, "The Democrats are too centrist and refuse to propose or support liberal policies." Which is absolutely true, by the way. Any American liberal has at best a relationship of convenience with the Democratic Party. If there were an actual liberal party in America, a lot of us would flee the Democratic sphere of influence in a hot second.

what's hard to understand about conservatives white hot naked hatred for anything having to do with the government?

Like:
America's first proactive, presumptive war
oil subsidies,
sugar subsidies,
grain subsidies,
low taxes on capital gains,
ineffective environmental regulation and enforcement,
ineffective election oversight,
candidates for government positions taking undocumented "election support",
Supreme Justices ruling that "election support" is constitutional free speech,
Supreme Justices disenfranchising an entire state during the constitutional resolution of a contentious presidential election,
etc.,
etc.

They like all three branches of the government a HELL of a LOT OF THE TIME, if the payoff makes sense.

No, no s/he's not.  I'm a Democratic Socialist, which 1. has nothing to do with the Democratic Party, and 2. has no voice in US politics.  There is no left wing party of any substance currently in US politics.

He wasn't really a socialist. Jesus  was more of a communist, as Jesus did not declare that the workers should control the means of production so much as Jesus was all about straight up sharing everything. He essentially espoused the "To each according to his needs" part of the famous Marx quote.

jedihirsch: coco ebert: I honestly thought he had already become a Democrat.

Well he was one of the 10 most liberal senators when he was in the senate. He was more liberal than Ted Kennedy according to voting records. Never understood why he was a republican in the first place. I mean he lost a senate race to a liberal democrat who wasn't as liberal as him. He was the ultimate RINO, now in the zoo cage he belongs in....with the asses

As I understand it, he was a Republican out of respect for his father, who was a Governor, Senator, and goddamn hero, so that's a good reason there.  Their politics are fairly similar as well.  To call him a RINO just shows how narrow the Republican party has become - it's a term that inherently discredits moderates or progressives, and more or less rejects anyone whose politics doesn't fit the extremism du jour.  Someone up the thread put it pretty well - the Republicans lost the Bull Moose Progressives with Teddy, and the social progressives with the Civil Rights Movement.  Now they're left with a bunch of attention whores who love the sound of their own voice more than they love their country who drag the entire discourse down.

It's a crappy situation - two party politics still isn't going anywhere, it's just becoming more shrill and desperate.  I actually applaud Marco Rubio for what he's doing on immigration, although I hate his other political stances, but I'm afraid that he's just committing political suicide.

This would be a far better country for the majority of its citizens if Sanders occupied a center position in the US political spectrum.  I kinda doubt our Overton window can shift that much.

When a government has repeatedly and deliberately failed to follow its own laws, violated the fundamental human rights of its citizens, threatened the sanctity of a free press, created institutions intended to eliminate privacy of communication, waged war at the behest of special interests that threatens the public safety, killed hundreds of children with drone strikes, imprisoned and destroyed the lives of countless individuals for victimless crimes, stifled economic opportunity to maintain the dominance of the financial elite, stolen from the people through an absurd system of taxation and inflation, sold future generations into debt slavery, and abused its power to suppress political opposition, it is unfit to exist and it becomes the duty of the people to alter or abolish that government by whatever means necessary to secure liberty and ensure peace. A new American revolution is long overdue. This revolution has been brewing in the hearts and minds of the people for many years, but this Independence Day, it shall take a new form as the American Revolutionary Army will march on each state capital to demand that the governors of these 50 states immediately initiate the process of an orderly dissolution of the federal government through secession and reclamation of federally held property. Should one whole year pass from this July 4th while the crimes of this government are allowed to continue, we may have passed the point at which non-violent revolution becomes impossible. The time to sit idly by has passed, to remain neutral is to be complicit, just doing your job is not an excuse, and the line in the sand has been drawn between we the people, and the criminals in Washington, DC. While some timid souls will say that it is too early, that we can solve this problem through democratic means provided by government, that current levels of taxation are reasonable for the services provided, and that the crimes of this government are merely a tolerable nuisance; it may already be too late. While there is risk in drastic action, the greater danger lies in allowing this government to continue unchallenged. So if you are content with the status quo, stay home, get fat, watch the fireworks from a safe distance, and allow this Independence Day to pass like any other. But if you see as we see, and feel as we feel, we will see you on the front lines of freedom on July 4th 2013 for this: The Final American Revolution.

Are Republicans just seriously incapable in seeing nuance? Is their worldview just ENTIRELY black-and-white, with us or against us, good vs. evil?

Because that is an extremely childish worldview. Which would, come to think of it, explain the GOP's childish actions, like shutting down the government whenever the voters don't give them absolute power.

Did some cursory reading on him, and he seems to have a set. I don't say that because I agree with those votes (I do), but because he bucked the trends in his own ideological circle. Doing what you think is right takes a pair of low-hangers.

You better be beatin' that speed tipple.

LordJiro: Are Republicans just seriously incapable in seeing nuance? Is their worldview just ENTIRELY black-and-white, with us or against us, good vs. evil?

Because that is an extremely childish worldview. Which would, come to think of it, explain the GOP's childish actions, like shutting down the government whenever the voters don't give them absolute power.

They might be capable, and choose not to because the people who send them money think in Black and White.  Christian, Caucasian, Corporation (ooh, the CCC to replace the KKK) are all part of the white side, so the black side is everything else.  You can't even enumerate the "black" part of black and white, apart from "it is't the white".  Maybe when the voting republic gets tired of this crap they'll change, but that always takes time.  My grandfather was born in Mexico in 1912, became a citizen of the US in 1936 (Navy) and hated blacks whose families had been here for literally 200 years before him.  He got over it a few years before he died.  I guarantee his kid an grand kids got over it big time, except for the Dutch.  fark the Dutch.

hardinparamedic: Christ, you're an asshole.

I just said this to my dog about 30 seconds ago, for sh*tting on the bathroom floor.

I like how memes become common language. Once, during a Saints game, I drunkenly told a girl to "Your whore mouth, you best shut it." Her boyfriend, who was larger and more sober, just laughed. Thankfully. That guy could have easily sent me to the hospital.

/wouldn't tell a girl that unless completely 'faced, which I was

I don't remember who said it in another thread but it applies here (and to me as well)...

Ronald Reagan started out as a Democrat but switched in the 60s. When he was asked about it he said "I didn't leave the Democratic Party. The party left me". Well Lincoln Chaffee didn't leave the Republican Party...

Ray_Peranus: this Independence Day, it shall take a new form as the American Revolutionary Army will march on

the city-county complex, baffling clerks and confusing people trying to renew their driver's licenses. After an extended impasse, the three of them will take over the landfill & sanitation office for about an hour. Then one of them will absent-mindedly walk in front of a large window where the shade has not been drawn, and a sheriff's deputy positioned in a tree outside will take him out with a single well-placed rifle shot. The other two will attempt to slip out the back and end up in cuffs.

The story will appear in the local five-days-per-week newspaper, and be posted on the newspaper's clumsily-styled website, where some local yokel will see it and submit it to FARK with a HOTY-worthy headline. FARKers will gather to laugh at the dumbassery, and try to recall...what the hell was that guy's FARK handle again? "Rape her anus" or something like that? Anyway...tastes like chicken.

And on to the next one...

Aquapope: Ray_Peranus: stuff blah blah blah stuff
/kokesh

Is that supposed to be a David Koresh quote?  "kokesh" doesn't return anything in the Googles... so can't be very important.  So what are you saying?  or not saying, in your own words if you can.

Its from THIS. I don't envy your journey if you go there but if you do I pray you come back safe.

/Can I come with you to the past? I'm an excellent cook and a great travel companion. The Doctor asked me to join him once but I was studying for finals.
