The man did two things no other Republican in the Senate did... He voted against Bush's tax cuts, and he voted against authorizing force in Iraq. Just as he promised he would. You can say he did it because he was in a safe seat, but he was not and he lost to Sheldon Whitehouse because of those two votes.

He also called correctly for the state NOT to fund 38 Studios. Those three things are enough to ensure my vote and many other Rhode Islanders regardless of what silly letter is after his name. He was a Republican politician because his Father was a Republican politician. Much like how many families keep the same affiliation, with notable exceptions of course.

Sure, he is Governor Gump. He has sh*tty public speaking habits and is kinda slow. However, he has been an honorable man and voted the right way in the eyes of history, when it really mattered.

Hope he stays.

So did most of Rhode Island.  Not that I fault him for what  NewportBarGuy said,  but him being an "independent" never really sounded right.

I lived in Rhode Island during the 2006 campaign, and remember his TV ads were basically begging voters not to kick him out just because he was a Republican.

There was a time when he was an example of a New England Republican, back when it meant someone who thought the government could regulate the dickery out of the free market, but doing it cheaper and more efficiently. Just the other day Rachel Maddow showed a clip of Bob Dole, who used to be conservative  at his 1996 acceptance speech saying government could be the crucial buffer to keep people from falling into complete failure.

When Laffey primaried him and handed that Senate seat to Sheldon Whitehouse, I think it was the real last straw for him with the Republican party.  But he couldn't find it in his heart to actually become a Democrat until he realized they line up far more with his policies.

He just didn't put on the Dunce Cap and Herpa-Dee-Derp with the rest of the republicans.

McCain is right. Even Reagan would have been bashed by today's gop. That's what happens after a generation of hate and purges. Once you've distilled out all that is good decent from the gop, all you have left is a nuthouse full of cranks, bigots, and loons.

Paging Olympia Snow. Olympia Snow to the white phone.

Respect is not given, but earned. I guess that goes for shame, too. Republicans don't want to be given shame, they want to earn shame. They worked hard for it. I'd be remiss if I didn't recognize their achivement.

Shame.

Here's how it goes from my point of view, the Republican party lost sane economics when the Bull Moose party dragged economic progressives out of it, and sane social justice policy when Goldwater led the southern strategy after LBJ signed the 64 civil rights act.  Everything since then (neoconservatives and Nixon, religious right, voodoo economics, Iran-Contra and Reagan and Bush the elder, Bush the younger and ramping up of retarded policies, teabaggers and everything after) has just been something without any redeeming qualities getting worse and worse.  The party has pretty much been actively gathering everything that is greedy, stupid, and evil in America and wrapping it all in one disgusting bundle.
To quote Hunter S. Thompson "Who does vote for these dishonest shiatheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid little rich kids like George Bush? They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us; they are the Ku Klux Klan."   Anybody who has chosen to be associated with that mess in the past several decades needs to take a long time to sit down and figure out how and why they got in that mess before going forth to screw with public policy once more.

No, no s/he's not.  I'm a Democratic Socialist, which 1. has nothing to do with the Democratic Party, and 2. has no voice in US politics.  There is no left wing party of any substance currently in US politics.

Well he was one of the 10 most liberal senators when he was in the senate. He was more liberal than Ted Kennedy according to voting records. Never understood why he was a republican in the first place. I mean he lost a senate race to a liberal democrat who wasn't as liberal as him. He was the ultimate RINO, now in the zoo cage he belongs in....with the asses

Democrats. Pay attention and stop moving goalposts and No True Scotsman-ing the situation.

Why is it that the left-wing in America insists they're centrists and the only true left-winger who ever existed is Lenin and Marx? Stop with this retarded slide-rule comparison to the rest of the world.

Social and economic equalization? Not many Democrats support that. They mostly support social and economic equality. I know to an ignorant derper like yourself those words look similar but they have very different meanings.

Today's liberals and democrats are on the left of today's political spectrum, but that's not the whole spectrum.  That's the whole point.  There's much more to the left than today's Left.  Even Nixon was more left than Clinton or Obama, based on his agenda and theirs.  That doesn't mean Nixon was Left, based on the context of the time.

It's not binary, dumbass.  It's not LEFT/RIGHT.  Its where in the spectrum of left and right that's being discussed.  That means *gasp* relativism, so you need to get over it.  There isn't a big box LEFT and a big box RIGHT, and such-and-such ideals or philosophies or policies only exist in some pure form that fit into only one box.  Seeing only a black or white, binary world is a pretty primitive way of looking at things.  Not a very intellectually designed world-view, I'd say.
