panic at the headline, then read the article

As scary as it sounds, the WHO cautioned that there's no current concern that the virus will lead to a full on  Contagion-like scenario.

"This pattern of person-to-person transmission has remained limited to some small clusters and so far, there is no evidence to suggest the virus has the capacity to sustain generalised transmission in communities."

It's not a matter of 'If' though, it's a matter of 'When'.

Coronavirus? Is that what makes gringos push the lime into the beer bottle when the lime's only purpose is to keep bugs out?

No, you shouldn't *panic*. It is cause for concern, which is why the WHO and probably CDC are going to take it seriously, much like they did SARS.

And before people go 'Pssshhh and Sars was a bust, these people are just fear mongers!'. First, no, the fearmongering is in the media. These folks are just going "so we've got a nasty virus that seems to transmit person to person, and so we're taking steps to clamp down on it now'. Secondly, SARS was a i part bust *BECAUSE* the CDC caught it and clamped down early, and *HARD*.

The article and the WHO spokesman are measured and factual. Fark headline is pure FUD and then makes fun of spreading FUD and media overreaction.

Is this really a bad thing? The world has too many a-holes in it already. Unemployment is sooooo high. Maybe the death a millions or a billion people would be good for the world. Stop the 50% of unemployed jerks in Europe from rioting. And making it easier to find a high paying job in America.

Bah, I meant the CDC clamped down on SARS cases here (and I believe they worked with Canada? It was a while ago, I admit-grad school has kind of fried bits of my memory). I think WHO worked with china.

/You know, if we can get a global organization named WHAT, we're pretty close to an Abbot and Costello bit...

As evidenced by every thread of this type, the CDC spans the globe, running jump teams of physicist musicians that clamp down on suspicious infections spread by carnies.

H1N1 was a pandemic. It's not WHO's fault that you don't know what that word means.

SARS, Swine Flu, Avian Flu... which was bird flu... then wasn't... then came back for the sequel. Seriously, they're just making people care  less about this stuff and take less precautions. It's not their fault, though, it's headlines like this one and media fear mongering that make it worse. Personally, I'm pro-drug-resistant disease. Less traffic, shorter lines. But I could see how I'm in the minority there. I'd also like to ask if anyone has made a WHO cares joke yet.

UK or iceland are also good starting points,  UK has plenty of ship and Air traffic, and Iceland is one boat hop away from the UK but it also has boats that go to greenland and air traffic to new zealand

Similarly with the asteroids, the supervolcanoes, ice ages, the fall of civilization, the evaporation of Earth's seas, the growth of the Sun to a red dwarf, increasingly-bad Michael Bay movies, the heat death of the universe, etc.
